Sabres pay stiff penalty for not staying out of box

‘The Sabres killed five of seven penalties against the Stars and have allowed at least a pair of power-play goals in four of the past five games. Opponents have struck with the man advantage in seven of the last eight outings. Buffalo’s penalty-kill unit entered the game ranked 27th in the 30-team league. By the time the updated stats come out today, they’re sure to be lower.’

Rivet says he’ll find a way to play better

‘”Right now is a very difficult time for this team. We’re trying to grasp the style of play that we want to play, which I don’t think we’ve found yet. We want to try and build some momentum as a team, and individual play comes into effect. He wasn’t happy with the way I’ve been playing, and I’m sure you can probably look around the room and can maybe point out a few guys. But me individually, I think I need to be better, I need to be better for the team to have success. This is going to be a period where I need to sit back and re-evaluate the things I need to do a lot better on the ice.”‘

Finding a scapegoat for Sabres’ slow start is tough

‘See, when it comes to the Sabres, the need for changing the players or the coach doesn’t mean change is coming. Don’t be surprised if the roster remains basically intact and Ruff and Regier survive this season given the extenuating circumstances surrounding the organization.’

‘“We tried to play a little more aggressive and we got flagged for some calls,” Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said. “You’re playing back-to-back games and it takes a lot of players out of the game. You can try to kill four (penalties), but it takes a lot of energy out of your team.”’
