Numminen takes a seat for Sabres

‘"I said, "That’s fine. You guys say when I play and when I don’t play,’ " Numminen said. "I’m fine with that. I expected that it’s going to happen at some part of the season. You always want to play. That’s why you’re here. You’re a player and you want to play. But I knew it was going to happen."’

Tallinder in, Numminen out

‘“First and foremost, it’s about winning,” Ruff said. “We’ll address who we think our top six [defensemen] are and what we think is going to work. Right now we’re looking for more of a physical edge with Butler in the lineup and we’ll see how it goes.”’

Bounces averaging out for Rangers

‘Every year, it seems, the Rangers seduce the hockey world with their big-ticket players only to watch them come up small.’

Once-proud penalty killers now in a funk

‘It’s really bugging Roy. “It does,” the center said Friday. “We were top two, three in the league, and then we dropped. I don’t even know where we are right now. We’re getting scored every game on it."’

Better penalty kill needed against Rangers

‘“Some of it’s been mental. (Thursday) wasn’t mental, it was a physical mistake we made,” Ruff said. “We missed an assignment and put a puck where we didn’t need to put it. We’ve been a little snakebit, but we’ve got to be better in that area."’

Miller’s way

‘”That hit home, and the lesson I learned is you have to be part of the community,” Miller said. “You have to be active and contribute. You don’t just take.”‘
