'It makes sense for the Sabres to wait until just before the 3 p.m. deadline to finalize a deal. A trade involving their top goal scorer virtually would concede their postseason bid, especially if they were to send him to the Islanders. The Sabres are eight points behind the Islanders for the Eastern Conference's eighth playoff slot. Any proposed Sabres-Islanders deal could be squelched if the Sabres make up ground over the weekend.'
'Brown is making $1.6 million this season and will become a restricted free agent this summer. It's plainly evident the Sabres could pay someone else substantially less money to skate on the fourth line and kill penalties.'
'General manager Mike Milbury has inquired about high-scoring Sabres forward Miroslav Satan and Capitals defenseman Brendan Witt, but the possibility of landing either remains tenuous, at best, because the organization is hesitant to give up prospects. It is believed the Islanders are among three teams talking about Satan with the Sabres, who want second- year forward Mattias Weinhandl in return.'
