  1. Jesus. So unexpected... I knew he'd struggled with addiction but thought he'd come all the way back and was well. So sad.

I read an interview with the manager of an L.A. comedy club who'd known him for decades (sorry I can't provide a link) -- she said that, while she was widely thought to have known him well, she never really knew him; he was always full of voices and characters, but that he always seemed to be in pain underneath it all. Tears of a clown, as Smokey once sang.

I also saw this posted on my Facebook feed, and loved it. (Volume is low -- you will need to turn it up.)

  2. Well, lookie here. I had never seen this thread, long though I have lurked.

I'm told that I'll be enjoying some "Bullet" bourbon this evening. I am sure I spelled that wrong. I should just open a tab and Google it. Well, anyway ... we saw-heard this bourbon mentioned on an episode of Louie of all things, and now it's on the cocktail menu tonight.

Are we supposed to drink it straight - whether neat, with water or a cube - or make a Manhattan out of it?

  3. I had no idea we were not replacing the artificial turf with real grass.

    Boycott!!

    EDIT TO ADD:

I thought that BMO Field in Toronto added a grass pitch a few years ago and I was right.

So, unless I am out to lunch on this, some of the WC matches will be played in Toronto.

It's a day later and I am still so miffed about this!

I had thought the same thing about Toronto as a host city, but when I went to price tickets for the soccer lovers in my house I found that the closest venue to Buffalo is Montreal. I am not sure why Toronto's not among the host cities. They must have something else big going on in the summer of 2015.

  4. This is a fun question.

As someone else has noted, it's possible that we could be a bubble playoff team and the Islanders could be "working" to bring us one of the elite prospects. That just seems unlikely, no?

I agree that we need to be prepared to see this plan through. We need and want elite players. In order to get them, we need to stink it up. Again. We need to "trade the days for the years," as a parenting book once counseled me.

Darcy was not wrong when he talked about "some suffering."

  5. I also read that Ekblad was concussed and is done with the summer training program. I'm not sure how I'd feel if I were a Panthers fan, seeing that play. I don't just mean that the young man was injured (and I hope he recovers) -- I mean that he managed to put himself in that position. What will become of him in the NHL?

  6. Canada - avoiding international controversy since 1867

    Speaking of Canada.

Shame on FIFA, first of all. I'm also disappointed that Canada would plan to host a World Cup with artificial turf fields. I've been to the Sahlen's facility in Rochester for several games ... it is a very different (inferior) game when the ball is skidding across the turf than when it's making its way over natural grass.

  7. Yadda yadda.

I just want to give a shout-out to your avatar. The heck is it?

Darned if I know. I can't even remember how I found it ... some Google image search for a play off my revised screen name (which I changed once I saw that there was a "Sabre Dance" who'd come before me)? It looks like a bird of some kind. With figure skates. On ice. With purple socks.

    Johnny Weir! :)

At first I was like "who?" Then I remembered. He's just marvelous.

I think it is Darcys protype of a hockey player.

  8. I don't think Devine leaves right away or this coming summer unless he gets pushed out or gets a title demotion, and I don't think that'll happen.

Presume Devine has his own reasonable career interests. He either wants to keep his job or he wants to get promoted. So he either stays or he gets promoted to GM of another team. What are Devine's best chances to get hired? AFTER the demonstrated rebuild occurs, not during or immediately after the big draft. His resume will be most more impressive when the rebuild-by-draft that he has a large hand in is completed and shows signs of working, and he gets credit for immense drafting prowess. Not before.

There's internal logic to what you are saying. My guess is that he's okay with being an AGM or head of some department and is a known commodity to the people who will be hiring him. I don't think he sticks (or needs to stick) around with Murray's crowd in order to pad his resume.

  9. I don't see a reason to fire/remove Devine. He has been doing a good job since Pegula expanded the scouting staff, lots of upside having him on the payroll.

I would expect him to take an unofficial demotion here, and then look to land in a hockey department where he's with some of "his" people. It just seems to be how that industry works. It also seems like that's what the Sabres are allowing him to do by keeping him on.

  10. Key actually seems to be all but withdrawing from our area. I always say M&T -- that is a Buffalo-based bank that's been around a long time and has had great success. (So my recommendation is maybe based more on boosting a Buffalo business rather than getting the best customer service experience.)

  11. We're just screwing around because there doesn't seem to be a coach or assistant who can put together a system yet. That's probably not the most important thing for this team right now, though.

I figured as much. I'm just not terribly quick on the uptake when it comes to that sort of stuff (movie quotes, in-jokes). Try as I might, I haven't been able to master that craft.

  12. You are absolutely doing it right.
Agreed - that is a most apt usage. "Well, it is late July, and cashmere is definitively a fall/winter fabric. I really should go with something lighter weight and more in keeping with summer wear. ... Screw it. It's cold out. ZFG."

Thanks, fellas. My Grandmother (God bless her soul) would've been aghast at my choice of clothing on this 30th of July, but the conditions warranted it!

  13. Matt Ellis is the new Vice Assistant Coach for Strategery.

    Not Developmentacation?
No. The Sabres are going to get an Xs and Os guy for that, and use the gritty veteran for strategery.

As usual, the banter of regulars around here has a way of flying over my head. Of course, that is a pretty easy height to clear.

Ellis's name popped into my head because he strikes me as the kind of player who ends up being an effective coach.

  14. It is interesting how Nolan has brought in another, more senior, heart and soul and guts, get the team to run through a brick wall sort of guy. I guess we can assume that Trottier will be a "fit" with Nolan's approach to coaching the game (he's pretty open about not being a system guy -- more of a passion and execution guy). I've seen others around here remark that the long-term plan may be to get someone else in here when the team is ready to make a leap. But that may not be for several years! In the meantime, get the youngsters molded by the right influences.

And, a question: Is Matt Ellis still a member of the franchise? Rochester?
