  1. For bourbon I have recently become a fan of Buffalo Trace, it's cheap and far better than it's Kentucky distilled brothers. Plus...BUFFALO, need I say more? Favorite bourbon mixed drink is certainly an old fashioned, though bitters isn't for everyone.

I am currently working on a handle of BT, so glad my roomate ###### up and got me the handle rather than the liter or 750. Also, Bulleitt is right up there, try it, about $35/liter, but worth it. It's a bit different and takes a little getting used to, but once you get it, it's amazing.

  2. On the bourbon front - anyone ever have the Evan William 1783? I've heard good things about it - excellent quality for a good price. But haven't seen it in any stores I've been to.

Pretty sure they sell it around here, I might look into it, but it might be pricey for me. I'll let you know either way.

  3. That's still gonna be a problem. My handles are molded plastic and never cost more than $20. ;)

Haha, my roomate drinks "Old Crow" 86 proof. $20 a handle, with an additional $5 rebate. So $15.

I would say that Irish whisky is probably the most accessible for a newcomer. Bourbon (mmmmm) is often too sharp, and Scotch has that peat taste that is often off-putting, for someone not used to drinking whisky. Jameson is a little sweeter than Bushmills (which I prefer because it is less sweet) and might be the place to start; Tullamore Dew is sweeter still. (EDIT: note these are not high-end bottles; they are a place to start.)

Open it up with a little water or ice, and SIP, don't drink!

I can't do Jameson. First time I tried it, I ended up dumping it. Gave the rest of the bottle away. I threw a party a few weeks ago, and a kid traded me a bottle of Jameson for use of our keg, I was drunk and accepted. I drank that bottle, the first few glasses I found to be delicious, but they seemed to get more and more disgusting as I drank them...

  4. I do know that I do not like Scotch. I don't really have any favorite bourbons and I don't really want to learn what is good and what is bad, because then I'll have to pay extra to get the good stuff. As long as it does the intended job, I like it.

Pffft. I can tell you what's "good" without putting you a dime over $40 for a handle.

  5. That's not a bad list you are starting there.

We also bought a bottle of Rare Breed for special occasions. And I killed a bottle of Jameson (against my will, it was free...) but that doesn't count.

Rare Breed is almost too good to enjoy, I feel guilty drinking it at $45/bottle, Bulleitt was one of my favorite, although it took a lot of getting used to and taste acquiring. And I am lovingggg my bottle of Trace.

  6. I'm a bit of bourbon snob myself. I assume because you didn't spell it whisky that you don't include Scotch in your snobbery. Nothing quite like a glass of oak aged corn mash distillate and a nice cigar on a summer evening. Or a cold winter evening for that matter. Awwww, hell, any old evening you might find me with a glass of whiskey in hand.

I started out with JD manhattens then switched to Makers Mark manhattens. Pretty soon I was putting less and less vermouth in the glass. Eventually I had to admit the truth and realize it was that delicious viscous brown liquid I was after. Began discovering the other bourbons on the shelf and now I am counting the hours to my next glass of Eagle Rare or Four Roses or Russels' Reserve or.....

For college students, my roomate and I are quite the snobs ourselves. We started drinking Wild Turkey American Honey in coke, then moved on to others, to the point where we drink it on the rocks now. We have at least one empty bottle of the following:

    Wild Turkey American Honey

    Wild Turkey Original

    Wild Turkey 101

    Wild Turkey Rye

    Jim Beam

    Jim Beam Red Stag

    Jim Beam Green Label

    Jack Daniels

    Bulleitt

    Old Grand-Dad 100

    Bakers

    Old Crow

    Buffalo Trace

The Buffalo Trace 125 corn whiskey is also delicious on the rocks.
