'To me, they could have gotten a deal done with Drury during the course of the season. I know he was open to it. Given what he's accomplished in the league and with Buffalo, I think most of the players in the room would understand the team's desire to get him signed sooner rather than later. In fact, I think SOME players would even view that as a positive sign that the team was serious about winning. The player I could see having a problem with it is Briere – the other big UFA, but again, he was playing for a contract as well, so motivation shouldn't have been a problem.'
'Numminen was originally taken in the second round (29th overall) by the Winnipeg Jets in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft. Numminen has appeared in three NHL All-Star Games (1999, 2000, 2001), and he represented Finland in the 2006, 2002, 1998 and 1988 Winter Olympics.'
‘In 16 playoff games he added four assists and had a team-high plus-10 rating, which tied with Anaheim Ducks Chris Pronger and Samuel Pahlsson for the league postseason lead.’
‘”We are delighted to have Teppo back for a third season in Buffalo,” Sabres general manager Darcy Regier said. “He provides great leadership and is a steadying influence on our blue line, while continuing to act as a positive role model for our younger defenseman.”‘
'Numminen had 2 goals and 27 assists for the Sabres in 2006-2007 and added 4 assists in the playoffs.'
‘The Buffalo Sabres have re-signed defenseman Teppo Numminen to a one-year contract worth $2.6 million, the same contract he played with last season.’
'The deadline for restricted free agents to file for arbitration is 5 p.m. Thursday, and Sabres center Derek Roy plans to be on the list. “We haven’t had any discussions yet with the club, so we’ll no doubt be filing for arbitration,” Roy’s agent, Larry Kelly, said Tuesday from his office in Ottawa.'
‘So go ahead and vent. Hate the Sabres all you want. But you’ll love them again. You always do.’
