'Quietly and independently, the Sabres raised $44,000 for the families of 12 fallen New York firefighters earlier this season. Saturday night, nine of those families and a handful of firefighters who survived the Sept. 11 attacks came to the Garden as guests of the Sabres and met with the players in a closed-door session following the game.'
