Chants of "Thank You Sabres" — a tribute that originated at the end of a long home unbeaten streak during the 1973 season and was heard once again with the Sabres on the brink of elimination from their very first playoff series a few months later — roared through the rafters.

'I still believe the best [Michael Peca trade] possibility comes from Long Island, in part because Isles GM Mike Milbury is in a desperate situation. Sources said last year the Isles were willing to part with center Tim Connolly, a future impact player, in a package for Peca. The Isles have the second pick overall.
