'"What makes it is when you see the expression on the kids' faces," said Regier, the Sabres general manager. "The hype and the excitement, it's pretty neat. It's what hockey is all about."'

'“I think there should be (a cap),” Gaustad says. “Right now, I’m on the lower end of the salaries, about $525,000, and I’d be more than willing to take a pay cut to get this thing going — for the health of the game. As players, we’re getting a little too greedy, but you gotta blame the owners for willing to give (players) the money. Both sides have screwed up.”'

'By the way, the two sides met again last week. Anybody notice? Anybody care?'
'Some more news to come out of last week's GM meetings may be of more interest to fans. The NHL playoffs are rumored to be expanded from 16 teams to 20 teams, good news for teams like the Sabres that have barely missed the playoffs for years on end. This "play into" the playoffs concept would pit the 7-10 seeds in each conference in a 3 game mini-playoffs, the two winners of each series become the 7th and 8th seeds in the playoffs which would remain unchanged.'
'But like Vanek, Stafford may force the Sabres' hands by deciding to turn pro, a decision that would result in the loss of his NCAA playing eligibility. Stafford, unlike Vanek, is not likely to step into the pro's and make an impact. He would be a project much like Dan Paille but also like Paille should eventually bloom into a solid NHL player.'
'You realize how quickly things changed when you look around the Aud, now a giant time capsule. Almost every seat remains in place. Blue and gold paint adorns the hallway outside the Sabres' dressing room, where the only thing that separated fans from players were a rickety fold-up gate and an arm's length.'
