'Dominik Hasek's future might be up in the air with the Buffalo Sabres. What's solid is the All-Star goalie's relationship with team owner John Rigas.'
In the meeting between the Sabres and Dominik Hasek on Tuesday in Coudersport, Pennsylvania, neither side shocked the other with an unexpected or unreasonable idea or demand, according to a member of the Sabres' communications department who spoke to The Sabres Edge today.
"As it went in, pandemonium set in on our bench, and I had to calm things down," Lindy Ruff explained later. "There was still a minute to play."
'The Sabres hold the option to extend Hasek's contract one season for $9 million. But the two-time Hart Trophy winner as the NHL's MVP reportedly has offered to play what would be his 10th season in Buffalo for $6 million.'
'The fact that Hasek asked for the meeting, suggests he wants to play at least another year.'
Buffalo Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier and goaltender Dominik Hasek met on Tuesday, The Sabres Edge has learned.
‘They are reportedly in cahoots with the Buffalo Sabres, hoping to get Mike Peca’s rights and one of the Sabres’ goaltending prospects, Martin Biron or Mika Noronen.’
With the announcement of one minute remaining, the Sabres pulled Crozier but struggled to muster any offense. Before five consecutive faceoffs, the fans conceded the outcome and displayed their emotions for the effort their Sabres had given. Chants of "Thank You Sabres" — a tribute that originated at the end of a long home unbeaten streak during the 1973 season and was heard once again with the Sabres on the brink of elimination from their very first playoff series a few months later — roared through the rafters.
'I still believe the best [Michael Peca trade] possibility comes from Long Island, in part because Isles GM Mike Milbury is in a desperate situation. Sources said last year the Isles were willing to part with center Tim Connolly, a future impact player, in a package for Peca. The Isles have the second pick overall. Connolly and the pick in a package for Peca and someone else makes more sense.'
'Any season is draining but losing from ahead, three games to two and failing to hold up a pair of one-goal, third period leads won't be forgotten easily, if at all.'
'"I think they've been vindictive enough," he said of Sabres management. "They've made their point. Now it's time to move on."'
'Not every broadcaster in town disagreed with Doug Gilmour's diatribe Saturday against "Hockey Hotline" hosts Mike Robitaille and Brian Blessing. Sabres broadcast analyst Jim Lorentz:…"Doug is right."'
'"The Sabres won't be short of suitors who come calling," Fletcher said.'
'Teams known to be interested in him include Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Toronto, Dallas and the New York Islanders. The Blackhawks might also try to lure him back. Will the Coyotes?'
'The Tampa Bay Lightning no longer expect to stock the Rochester Americans with their prospects, meaning the 22-year marriage between the Amerks and Buffalo Sabres will very likely be extended for five more seasons.'
