This Day in Sabres History :: June 30

June 30, 2001

With a midnight deadline nearing to either pick up Dominik Hasek's option of $9 million, trade him or let him become an unrestricted free agent, a vigil of sorts begins on the predecessor to this message board, at the time the only such forum in cyberspace. Hundreds log on and off throughout the day to learn the fate of The Dominator. What the fans don't know is that his fate is sealed. The goaltender had traveled to Coudersport, PA, after the season to meet with owner John Rigas to request a trade, and Rigas had agreed. Midnight comes. There is no news.

Crappy new logo design showcased on the front page of the Buffalo News. A letter writting campaign to team president Larry Quinn begins. Quinn announces the team is moving to Rochester where the fans like the new design and are nicer. The Rochester Raging Hampsters are born.

Your new avatar says it all!

Also on this day...Larry Quinn realizes he has F***ed this up in a big way and is trying to find a scape goat to blame the new logo design on. His choice...Jay McKee, since he is on his way out anyways. ;)

Anyone remember the movie "Wag the Dog"? The president starts a war to deflect attention from a personal scandal. You wonder if the timing of the logo "leak" is meant to take everyone's mind off the beginning of free agency -- a period that could very tough for many fans to swallow.
