Is it me or does it seem like the majority of people seem to sleeping on the acceleration of A.I.?  I myself am beginning to become uncomfortable.

Its hard to say. The vast majority? No. It seems to me half/half.

I have read articles and watched videos of 'expertes' who sound the alarm and make a compelling case that humankind will be destroyed in 5 years. Then I'll find another article/video saying how AI is basically a bubble/fraud, and the only near term danger to humanity is people using it to hack into a system and gain control of something they shouldn't.

So many arguments on either side.

I will say this slightly off topic. The term "A.I." is being used in many cases where it isn't artificial intellegence at all.  Its seems there are a lot of computer programs, a lot of 'apps', that are nothing more than code that doesn't think, that doesn't learn, it just runs, but yet people want to label it A.I.  sure there is some stuff out there that tries to learn, but if its a glorified web search, that isn't intellegence to me at all.

16 wrongful arrests based solely on AI facial recognition errors, subsequent attempted police cover ups in a few of those. 2 of which led to long incarceration times, enough to destroy the wrongfully ID’d individuals lives.

1 is to many, so yea, AI is extremely dangerous.

AI is already being used for fake political adds and no one is stopping it. The government has been caught using fake AI generated images to paint the opposition in a bad light. Who knows what else they are doing behind our backs.

AI itself is good, AI in the hands of humanity, or the people that run this world is bad.

I recently started getting AI commercials showing burned veterans telling people to buy stuff they make. Using fake AI generated burn victim veterans to sell you crap... AI generated pity scam. Just to let you know those adds are paid for by Chinese companies when you look into it.

At the moment AI is not the issue. The issue remains the people's use of AI.

Just like a gun doesn't kill people, people use a gun to kill people.

I'm not worried about AI autonomy at the moment.  Now, people being stupid with their tools?  I worry about that all the time.

What is more dangerous, what A.I. can do to us in the future, or what "A.I. companies" are doing to us right now?

There is a story I just heard on business radio that the new Facebook/Meta app Muse (their AI app), when installed on an iphone, is apparently ignoring users permissions to limit what it can access, and it is uploading data, including text messages, to their ai servers/data centers.

That isn't a danger of A.I. yet, that is a case of companies doing whatever they can for money and control.

https://appleinsider.com/articles/26/09/28/metas-new-ai-agent-blatantly-ignores-users-permissions

In a completely unsurprising turn of events, Meta's Muse AI is stealing Apple Messages, past and present, and uploading the contents to its cloud, even if explicitly told not to.

Meta says that Muse has to obey permissions that users set up. It won't access any data you don't explicitly allow it to access.

Of course, Meta also hedges, a lot, right at the top of the "How Muse works..." page, saying:

"Your Muse can make mistakes or take unexpected actions," Meta says. No kidding.

What I am getting from the article is somewhat scary.

I could have an Android phone, or an I-phone without Muse. Yet if I text someone who has an I-phone with Muse on it, everything I say to them, all the words I use, along with my name and possibly any contact info that person has stored in their phone, is being uploaded to Metas servers?

These companies will do almost anything for money and control.

Apologies to the swear filter.

***** AI. ***** it totally and completely. The energy required is astronomical, the water consumption and degradation of the natural environment is unforgivable. The technology is literally making people even more ***** stupid than they already are.

The tech nerds (musk, Altman et al) just want to be first to “crack AI”  their businesses are in debt, they are failures who believe they know what’s best for the planet when they blatantly don’t give two shits

So here is how things are likely to happen in my family.

-I never upload any AI app like this to my phone and tell my 70+ year old mother not to.

-My neices all upload it and use it. I swear they spend 70% of their time using AI engines and Facebook apps (like Instagram and whatsapp)

-My nieces use Muse. My mother exchanges messages with them, and this app somewhat embeds a link in a return message from my neices to my mother.

-My mother clicks on it (thinking its a picture or whatever), now Muse is backdoored somehow on my mothers phone.

-I text my mother and muse now collects my data throug her phone, my address, anything my mother has about me on her phone and every word I ever said to her is on on their servers without my permission.

Technology...it can be so lovely!

Not afraid in its current form.

However the rate of development is increasing.

Once it's able to develop itself then it won't take long before it potentially becomes very very disruptive.

There will need to be oversight and regulation to safely integrate it into our society.

I'm a few years from retirement (software dev) so I'm not too concerned, but I am very concerned about the impact on my kids and their careers.

This is my take as well.

Additionally I’m concerned with the development of critical thinking skills, reading, writing, and just problem solving with the youths.

I do a lot of technical writing/reviewing and the regression in writing quality has been incredibly fast.

That is the thing that isn't getting enough attention.

Whenever you have a question and you just 'ask A.I.', for the answer, you aren't 'thinking' of how to come up with that answer yourself. When you want a task done ad you 'just ask A.I." to do it, you aren't learning or exercising your ability to do basic tasks.

We are going to turn into a bunch of bags of skin that are just good at 'asking A.I.' for our basic needs. I sometimes think is A.I. going to turn us, in just a couple generations, into peopel depicted in Idiocracy?  But I think we are more on the way to becoming a society like on the ship in Wall-E.

That's the least of my worries.

Folks are concerned about illegal immigrants taking jobs away from American citizens.    Well... imagine a virtually inifinte number of immigrants, educated at a nobel laureate level across all disciplines, who don't require benefits, don't take sick days or vacations, and are able to work 24x7x365.     In a mixed capitalist economy, companies who employee only humans will have zero chance to compete with companies who employ AIs.

Sure AI's aren't at that level, but that's the end game of every Ai company and realistically is only a few years away... AGI, ASI, call it what you will.

We're like the Native Americans before North America was invaded by Europe.   If you had asked the natives if they were afraid of humans from Europe coming to their land they'd probably shrug and say meh... that is, until they watch them land on their shores holding metal rods that can kill you from long range with the pull of a trigger.     How terrifying that must have been, but how could they have known.

Overall I think it will push the capitalists to take steps too far; which will finally cause people to push against the types of powers governments and corporations have abused for too long. It will backfire. As long as it doesn’t monopolize and get controlled properly, but I think that cat is already out of the bag.

Problem is MIT produced a peer reviewed study showing the cognitive decline in people using AI to assist in work and there are folks who think it’s a fair trade off.  I don’t think we’re going to end up in some utopia with AI doing all the “work” stuff so we can be free to do what we choose with our lives/time. At the rate we’re going, people are exchanging their brain cells for “ease” of a task are fast tracking us towards lower wages and humans completing the tasks that machines are too expensive to do themselves. It’s a sad state of affairs we’re in, when people don’t value their own brain. I work with several people (in teaching) who are happy to “get ChatGPT to do it” for tasks that need teacher input. And the way the world is being politicised into “us vs them” we are creating zealots that won’t change mind/opinion when presented with facts and analyses.

a centrist position? 🙂

The biggest problem I think is we still have a large demographic not raised on this stuff that is easily led and faked out by the fake AI generated posts. The younger kids all raised on this recognize the fakeness of things quicker. It's their world.

"AI" by definition will surpass human intelligence in every aspect of life.

Therefore, it's impossible to "guess" where this will all lead to tomorrow.

That alone should make people wary.

No, it isn’t just you. I think a lot of people notice AI improving, but because it arrives as another app or feature, they may underestimate how quickly it could change work, information, and who has power.

Your unease isn’t fringe, either: a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll found 73% of Americans think AI companies aren’t doing enough to prevent harm. At the same time, experts disagree about how fast AI will advance and how severe the long-term risks may be, so concern doesn’t mean the worst outcome is inevitable.

It seems reasonable to feel unsettled and still keep a clear head: take the real changes seriously without assuming anyone knows exactly where they lead.

I can say with 100% confidence that this applies only to images and the kids can't identify fake info and info sources for *****.

Or the 'kids' think EVERYTHING is fake.

I have a 12 year old nephew who lives out of state. When just randomly showing is father (brother-in-law) pictures on our phones, he came over and just said/assumed anything he didn't like or know about was fake AI generated...when none of it was.

Agreed. Look at how GPS has impacted our internal sense of direction. We grew up using our brains, figuring out whete we were and then reading maps to determine how we needed to get to where we wanted to go. Then we looked for landmarks and read signs along the way.

Now we just blindly follow an icon on a screen or listen for an artificial voice telling us when to turn.

Apply tbe same to using AI ubiquitously and we train our brains to rely on something else. Not to mention losing all of our critical thinking skills.

We are becoming more and more "sheeple."
