Funny if they go for each other when the Habs at different points were considered favourites to acquire both players Yeah odd their hate for Knies? Seems like a pretty darn good player with good size. Maybe something with him we don't see? Quote

He hasn’t played with much talent other than Gaudreau and Werenski so there could be a bump with a guy like Matthews. 2 Quote

I know some of us beleive, and I have said this a lot before: Knies, so far in his career, is a product of playing with Austin Matthews. When he is with anyone else (even Tavares, Marner and/or Nylander) his numbers and production drop like a rock. And that is with a couple year, number of games sample size. It will be interesting to see how he does without Matthews. 1 Quote
PerreaultForever Posted September 28 Report Posted September 28 So Leafs think adding Marchenko takes them back to when they had Marner. Well, he's a good player, but their defense still sucks and their goaltending has a short shelf life so good luck with that. 1 Quote
Flashsabre Posted September 28 Report Posted September 28 I don’t see it but if others think Marchenko is significantly better then so be it Quote

Penalty killer, votes for selke as best defensive forward. Marchenko: career high 74 points. Not trusted to penalty kill or be on the ice late in games protecting leads. Decent career plus-minus, but his advanced defensive stats in many cases no where near Marner. Marchenko isn't a youngster either. He should be nearing, or at, his statistical prime. This is his 5th season and he is 26 now. And $12.5m per year for him? Better turn into an annual near 40+goal scorer WITH the best play of his career away from the puck. Flashsabre Posted September 28 Report Posted September 28 (edited) Knies for Marchenko with garbage thrown in. Friedman said Wood was untradeable and if you wanted Marchenko you had to take Wood. Toronto talking heads have all said Andrae looked awful in camp. Lorentz was already out on waivers. So the question is now is Marchenko at $12.5 million more valuable then Knies at $7.5 million or Edited September 28 by Flashsabre Quote
LGR4GM Posted September 28 Report Posted September 28 Toronto... lol. You need a legit defense and some depth. 2 Quote
mjd1001 Posted September 28 Report Posted September 28 (edited) So Marchenko's new deal starts NEXT year (almost a $9m raise per season), yet it looks like, at the moment, Toronto has to make some moves or put someone on LTIR because it shows they are currently $5m over the cap right now. Matthews has one more year left on his deal. Radysh and Rile on D are getting paid $16m between them and they are both over 30. Nylander is over 30. Tavares isn't getting paid a ton but he might not have much left in the tank in a year or so. Toronto is really going for it this year and next year. I don't blame them. If they need a rebuild, no reason to start it early when you can push chips forward on the table for the next 2 years, but wow, they need to do it in the next season or two. Domi, Merzlikens, and Joshua are all on ir. Ik at least Domi and Joshua have been for a bit. Quote
Flashsabre Posted September 28 Report Posted September 28 Looks like Leafs are almost $4 million over the cap. They are paying Merzlekins $4.3 million and Stolarz $3.75 million as backups so maybe they have a deal with one of them leaving Quote
mjd1001 Posted September 28 Report Posted September 28 (edited) On a side note about Columbus, I don't understand why its such an undesireable market for so many players (we hear). Its a mid sized city (Bigger than Buffalo for sure). The arena is getting pretty old but its a nice Arena in a pretty good entertainment district (at leat the last time I was there a few years ago). Maybe its not as 'upscale' as multi-million dollar athletes want, but their strip on High street with restaurants and clubs is like Elmwood in Buffalo but a little bigger/longer and a little nicer. The city is fairly affordable. Travel isn't an issue (you certainly aren't doing as many miles as if you lived in the western Canadian Cities). I would think its a good-center of the league market. But the stories we hear have players treating playing there like having to play for a non-playoff Winnipeg or Calgary team in the middle of winter. Edited September 28 by mjd1001 Quote

Flashsabre Posted September 29 Report Posted September 29 2 hours ago, LGR4GM said: Columbus retained 18% Yeah that’s the $4.3 million. He is making like $5.4 million. The Leafs just refuse to acquire quality dmen. Knies is the one trade chip they could use to acquire one but instead trade him for a similar winger they are paying $5 million more. Quote
