If you were Jarmo, what is the most you would part with in trade for Hellebuyck?

80 members have voted

  1. 1. How much would you pay for Helly (ie what is your maximum offer)?

    • Option #1: Mrkta or Kleber, plus 2027 first rounder, plus UPL or Lyon or Ellis -- which means you're almost certainly not getting him
      21
    • Option #2: Option #1, plus Quinn or McLeod or Norris
      28
    • Option #3: Option #1, plus Kulich or Östlund
      5
    • Option #4: Option #1, plus Helenius
      0
    • Option #5: Option #1, plus two of Kulich, Östlund and Helenius
      0
    • Option #6: Option #2, plus Kulich or Östlund
      2
    • Option #7: Option #2, plus Helenius
      0
    • Option #8: Option #2, plus two of Kulich, Östlund and Helenius
      0
    • More than Option #8 -- i.e. you think Helly is the missing piece for a 2-3 year run with a great shot at the Cup and you'll pay pretty much any price
      0
    • Less than Option #1 -- i.e. you don't want to give up significant assets for an expensive 33-year-old goalie.

  2. 2. Prediction time: will the Sabres trade for Hellebuyck? (Not whether you want them to do so -- the question is whether it will happen.)

    • Yes
      14
    • No

  3. 3. Prediction time: if the Sabres don't get Hellebuyck, who will?

    • Florida
      8
    • Vegas

    • Devils
      15
    • Hurricanes

What does a saving face deal for the WPG GM look like? UPL, McLeod, Kleber or Strbak, or a 2nd?  That’s 4 pieces including a starting goalie, a middle six center, a solid D prospect and a 2nd in 2027 or a 1st in 2028 if they balk at a 2nd.

This allows the Sabres to keep their young NHLers while adding Hellebuyck. I think Kulich can step into McLeod’s shoes while WPGs GM can tout McLeod’s back to back 50 pt seasons and being a good fit behind their No.1 center.

McLeod received Selke votes last season. You think Kulich is going to do that?

I doubt Kulich will garner Selke attention, but it’s just a matter of time before Helenius does.

Why do we care?  I do think Kulich can be a 50+ point player, play two way hockey and kill penalties.  He might not reach that level next season, but he could give us 80-90% of last year’s McLeod for 1/5 the cost.

I’m not in favor of acquiring Hellebuyck, but if Jarmo thinks that getting him makes us a contender, sacrificing McLeod in a trade helps make the money in the deal work for the Sabres.  It is also trading from where the Sabres have depth with Tage, Norris, Krebs, Carrick, Kozak, Östlund, Kulich, and Helenius all having the ability to play center.

FYI: I structured the deal to give WPG their requested 4 pieces, a goalie to replace Hellebuyck, a middle six center which they need and from where we have depth, plus 2 futures including a good D prospect where we also have depth and a draft pick.  I’ve moved the pick from a 1st to a second to reflect WPG GMs loss of leverage.

I have read from a few places today that part of a deal for Hellebuyck might be to Edmonton with a piece Winnipeg wants back being Devon Levi. (Some NHL rumors website called 'heavy.com', but also from  yahoo sports and the hockeywriters site.)

Interesting is that some of those site say that Vijami Marjala would be involved too, with them saying he is Edmontons top forward prospect they dont' want to let go. He was drafted by the Sabres and they elected to not sign him, last year in the AHL he had over 60 points.

Interesting as it’s been reported that Hellebuyck may want out of Canada entirely due to the harassment of his family by some Canadian fans after the Olympics and subsequent White House visit where he was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

I get why Sabres fans keep trying to put UPL into this deal but it's just not going to happen. Jarmo either makes a second deal or UPL would be Helly's back up at least for this year.

Twitter seems to think this is heating up again but then again it's twitter so it's often full of crap.

This is total bs.

The only credible rumor in that regard is the one that said he had a handshake deal with management when he signed that if the team took a nosedive they'd trade him if he wanted out and he simply asked for them to honor that.

I think if you believe Sabres can hold out for a bargain basement last minute deal you will also be disappointed. Chevy is stubborn.

Pretty much why I've mostly moved on from this idea entirely. Chevy will quite literally go down with his ship.

I don't think he will. I just don't think he will give him away for peanuts. I suspect he would now take what Jarmo offered months ago but Jarmo might not be offering that any more. Just speculating obviously.

He will give him away for peanuts if that’s what Helly wants. He’s done as. GM if he pisses Helly off. Helly has already fired his shot with a public trade request

UPL+Second and call it a day. UPL probably has to go elsewhere but whatever Chevy gets for him is his.

By the end of this season, he will be 1C and will be considered a league-wide top 10 1C.

I'll gladly sh1t in my hat and then eat it if that turns out to be the case.

I don’t really care if it’s BS or not. I was just referencing the reports that are out there. I don’t follow social media, so I wouldn’t know if his wife was harassed on any of those mediums. Hellebuyck is on record as saying the harassment of his wife was unfair though.

As for whether or not the Sabres should “hold out for a bargain basement last minute deal”, I don’t care about that either. Whether Jarmo acquires Helle or not makes no difference to me at all.

You are spot on about Chevy’s stubbornness on the matter, but that’s totally understandable to me as well. He stands to get crucified by the fans and media if he doesn’t get what they perceive as adequate compensation for a first ballot HOF goalie. He is between a rock and a hard place with this situation.

That offer had to happen before July 1 or two of the players (I'm guessing UPL & Norris were involved) could nix the deal. I'm not sure what Cheveldayoff was thinking if he wanted them. Jarmo wasn't bluffing. Unless he really thought he could get Benson and/or Doan instead.

I'd offer to Winnipeg:

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen
Jiri Kulich
Buffalo's 2027 first-round pick, lottery/top-10 protected

Absolutely not! Kulich should not be included in deal.

I have heard the Doan stuff but that might just be fan based with Doan nostalgia. He'd be under a heck of a lot of pressure there if they went that way but I doubt Jarmo would put him in a deal after signing him and saying how important he was.

I still think it boils down to timelines and whether or not you look at the trade in isolation or how it affects your roster. Myself, I see a window here now and I can see how it could close quickly (4-5 years from now) but management might think highly of themselves and feel confident they are just at the beginning and can maintain a much longer run. So they may have a longer timeline as they have had in the past. So if you want to try to win now you overpay and get him. If you are thinking build a dynasty in 4, 5 or maybe more years then you don't unless it's a bargain.

A bag of  pucks then?

To get a player of this caliber a sacrifice needs to be made.

I’m more than comfortable sticking with our group of goalies. We have some high end young players that are ready to play. Keep them—-not shed them.

This only makes sense of you believe Hellebuyck is the ONLY answer. What if UPL stays at .910? What is Colton Ellis is this years Bussi?

Anything more than UPL, Mrtka and 3rd round pick is not worth it.

Mrtka is a 1st rounder, no need to add a 1st on top of that for a 33y/o netminder.

If Helly was say 27-28y/o then yeah, but not for a guy past his prime.
