Honest question: what records are you referring to?  

Orr's career #'s have long been eclipsed by a dozen d-men.  And Makar is unlikely to ever approach the single-season record for points or awards totals that Orr still holds.

Fastest to 200 points as a D man and fastest to 100 playoff points as a D man. His trajectory is insane.

And he wasn't fastest to 300, 400, or 500 points.  Compare his trajectory to Orr's; Makar has definitely leveled off relatively.

Don't forget Orr's 1st season was in the 6 team NHL and his 2nd season was injury shortened.

As for the playoff stats; Makar will easily dwarf everything Orr did.  Orr only played more than 10 playoff games in a season 4 times his entire career.

Wadr, comparing Makar to Orr is a choice; and not a particularly good one IMHO.

Think about one defenseman winning 8 straight Norris trophies.  Seems impossible to ever happen again.

I’ll be honest, I agree with you. I didn’t see Orr play and I was lazy when I compared Makar to Orr without knowing the full scope of Orr as a player.  I think Makar is the best defenseman of his generation, but that doesn’t make him automatically comparable to the best defenseman ever.  That’s my bad.

It’s always, ALWAYS a slippery road when comparing current great players to the great players of bygone eras. So little of present day NHL hockey resembles the game of 50-60 years ago. The same can be said of most sports as well.

At what point do the superstars of a generation become generational superstars?

Also, because things change and if by some measure we are using generations... players of yesteryear could break more records because the bar was lower or there were new records to set.

The quality of player has improved immeasurably (although I am sure someone is trying to measure it). The overall skill level in the NHL is far greater than it was back then. 

So... all that to say. Cale Makar got a big ass contract. He won't be the last. The NHL will overextend on its financials, the economy will tank, and the owners will lock them out in 3-5 years resulting in contracts being terminated due to being unsustainable.

or.. the NHL will flourish and skilled players will just make more and more!

You are the man PFH.  

I do agree that Maker is the top defenseman of a large group of great young defensemen currently in the league.  He is on a HoF trajectory.  

Look at Orr's last full season, 1974-75.  80 games, 46 goals, 89 assists, 135 points, and 101 PIMs - earning his 8th straight Norris.  
Then he suffered another injury and was never the same playing only 36 games over the next 3 seasons.  

Some Sabres fans will delight in knowing that Orr is the biggest reason why Brad Park never won a Norris.

Makar is a great defenseman, but Bobby Orr was way way better compared to his peers.

Just using offensive numbers as a measure for a quick comparison.

Two Dmen outscored Makar this year and 4 others were within 9 points of him. The previous season he outscored every other Dman by at least 10 points. The year before that he was outscored by one Dman and 2 others were within 8 points. This is a sample of Makar’s offensive performance.

In 69/70 Orr led the entire NHL in scoring by 21 points, the next closest Dman was 77 points behind. The following year he was 2nd in NHL points with 139 and the next best Dman had 63. The year after that he was 60 points ahead of the next best scoring Dman. This was a pattern for almost 8 years.
