Are we ever going to get more out of Josh Norris?

When people talk about who is going to play Alex Tuch’s minutes and situations, nobody talks about Norris.

That’s what happens when you only suit up for about half your team’s games.

Norris is fast like Tuch, defensively responsible like Tuch, and he can produce offence like Tuch…when he plays.

He’s also killed penalties, been a 53.8% face-off guy, a 135-hit guy and a 35-goal scorer in his career, four things that didn’t happen last year in Buffalo. He plays a very Sabres style, but he’s got game Sabres fans haven’t seen.

Seventy games of peak Norris might be too much to ask, but it would go a long way to helping the Sabres repeat last year’s success.

Something to consider: the Sabres were 31/10/6 last year with Norris in the lineup.

If he’s healthy what do you think his numbers will look like?

My guess is he plays 65 games and puts up 50pts in some combination. He’ll have a couple streaks of point per game play but also have a couple droughts after injuries. More or less what he did this past year. If he could actually play 84 games he’d likely be very akin to Tuch as a center with 65 to 75 pts on average. But he’s made of glass so we can’t really imagine him sticking through a full year.

Well history says he's not going to play a whole season.  Guy has gotten injured literally every year he has been in the league and averages like 40 games per season.  He is effective when he plays... but he has never  ever played enough games.  He has literally zero of seven seasons with a sufficient amount of games played.  At some its not injury luck and is just the player himself

He was a warrior in game 6 against the Canadiens. I didn't know he had that in him. Doubt he ever plays more than 50 games in a season, though.

I would love to be wrong, but I don't see him ever staying healthy for 70 games and, more importantly, a playoff run.

If that's how it plays out, trading Cozens for Norris will probably prove to have been KA's worst move as GM.

I dunno.... Cozens was not as effective as he needed to be either.  It was basically an exchange of flawed players hoping a change of scenery would help.  Last year Cozens did pretty good:  28G/31A, but he still fell short of his career year in 2022-23 when he had 68 points.  And does he do that again this year, or does he fall back into the teens for goals like he has in his career so far?  Norris's flaw is injury; Cozens's flaw is inconsistency.

I think we will see some hot streaks but also some injuries and some invisible streaks as well. It's not as important as to what that averages out to be but more important as to when they will occur.

In 1-2 years it won't matter as Helenius will take his job in the top 6.

Norris is a talented hockey player who plays a 200 foot game and plays with pretty decent grit for a skilled forward.  He's not a fighter or banger, but he'll get into the dirty areas a bit and he'll stand up for himself or a teammate.  He's also a chronically injured player.  I suspect that when he's on the ice, he'll be a solid contributor, regardless of where in the lineup he plays.  I also think that he's destined to miss a fair amount of time due to injury.  Because of this, he can't be relied on.  Given his large contract, which he is worth if he plays a full season, he's not going to be able to be moved, so I think the Sabres will have him in the lineup to start the season, but will have contingency plans throughout, as they know they can't count on him to be in the lineup for a full season.  It's less than ideal, but the best they can do.  The contract is too expensive to buy out and the player has talent and plays the game the right way.  I really like Norris' game, and think he's a good guy, but would trade him if it were possible, due to the injury history and large contract.  Perhaps he'll be a throw-in/salary dump as part of a larger deal, but otherwise, he's going to remain a Sabre for the foreseeable future.  Maybe the stars will align and he'll remain healthy for the next few seasons, and that's the best possible scenario for the Sabres (and for Norris too).  Samuelsson managed to do it last season, but he is a bit younger.

His issues are purely mental. If the team isn’t getting bullied around he will be fine. If a team gets under our skin he’s toast. That’s when he then plays a game that isn’t his, goes invisible, and then gets hurt.

His injuries seem completely random.  One injury was a pulled stomach muscle on a face-off, another was from a hit he was willing to agsorb.   I do not see him shying away from the physical game.

Could any off-season physical program help him ?   I don't question his actual talent.

The Norris saga is a frustrating situation. It's obvious that when he's relatively healthy that he can play at a 2C and maybe even adequate 1C level. What's even more exasperating is that when he does get hurt it seems to plague him for most of the season. Right now, I put him in the category of being a bonus player for us. If he can stay reasonably healthy, I'm confident that he can be a contributing player for us.

Norris fits pretty well with the team construction . We have a lot of young talent that can use NHL experience...which having Norris on the roster will surely give them.😁

In the last 3 seasons he has played 50 games, 56 games, and 44 games.  His career high in games is 66 games set 5 years ago.  Why should we expect him to play anywhere close to a full season?  It’s a good thing we have Östlund, Helenius, Krebs, Kulich and even Kozak who can all play center when the inevitable to injury Norris occurs.  

If we get lucky he plays 60 games and scores 25 goals.  Norris and Zucker are playing their last year in Buffalo.

Don't forget his history with the Sabres:

- They trade for him -- giving up Cozens, who was far from perfect but was still a valuable asset who could've fetched a much better return than a guy who never plays and has an $8MM albatross contract -- and Norris gets hurt in his 3rd game in Buffalo and misses the rest of the season.

- He starts the next season and gets hurt in the FIRST game (a 4-0 home loss to the Rangers, who missed the playoffs, btw), and misses 25 games.

- He comes back after missing those 25 games, plays 20 games and then gets hurt again and misses another 13 games.

- He starts the playoffs for the 1st time in his career and gets hurt in the 2nd game, misses the next 3 games, comes back for 7 more playoff games and has a total of 1 goal (an empty-netter) and 2 assists in 10 playoff games.

Do we need to keep kidding ourselves about what is going to happen with him?
