Guess the day and age of friendly hometown discount contracts are long gone. Now it is pure greed with contracts getting completely out of control. Yes the cap is going up but in reality these big contracts will only serve to drive up ticket prices so we pay for the increases in the end. Kane got a absolutely crazy contract from a desperate Hawk team...sure am glad we did not overpay for Kane, or Helle for that matter. And Tuch and Bo with their contracts are more samples of overpaying. Maybe Power is overpaid some but compared to Bo he isn't at all...I would love to see Jarmo get us Thomas, one piece I would like to add. If we had himn against Montreal I think we may have very well won that series. 1 Quote

He not only got a generous contract from Chicago but also went back to the team he played most of his HOF career with. Why would he prefer Buffalo over Chicago? For nostalgic and financial reasons signing where he did made a lot of sense for him. 1 Quote

The positive PR and the hope that he will help the young players is worth the cost to them. The Sabres are in a different place than the Hawks. Ticket prices are directly proportional to operating costs, and players salaries are a very big contributors to rising operating costs and rising ticket prices. Vegas, the other Cup finalist, was 29th in GSAx. Good coaching and talent in other areas, can save a team from below-average, even bad, goaltending. Certainly the current trio does not have a deep enough sample size to justify real confidence. They do still need to prove that they can, in some combination, provide a solid follow-up to last season's strong performance. On balance though, I think the evidence leans more towards they will (or can) than towards they won't (or can't). - UPL has been a full-time NHL goalie for 3 seasons. In those seasons he was very good (.910), very bad (.887), and then very good again (.910). - Lyon, though older, has also only been a full-time NHL goalie for 3 seasons. Also like UPL, he has been up and down though to a lesser extreme: one good season (.904), a bad one (.896), and then a good one (.907). - Ellis has only played 16 NHL games, all last season, and had a solid .903 as a rookie. In his two prior minor league seasons he was right around .923. I don't want to over-analyze the general fan psychology on this. It does seem to me though, that UPL's 3 season record (and to a lesser degree, Lyon's) has people thinking there is a pattern and that we are due for the down year. I think that is largely an unfounded fear and is being overly pessimistic. I would say the trio is unlikely to repeat last year's regular season (5th in GSAx), but there is no reason to think they will collapse either. Of course, there is always the option for the coach to do a better job installing a structure that doesn't require goaltending to bail them out. Don't be surprised if Ellis is the future. Quote
