Colten Ellis to me is a goalie version of Peyton Krebs: works hard, useful, I like having him around, but not someone I’m building around. I think it did. They got away from the formula. Quote
GASabresIUFAN Posted July 24 Report Posted July 24 So why is Colten here? Simple, St Louis waived him and KA claimed him. Quote
Eleven Posted July 24 Report Posted July 24 Because he's a good goalie prospect and the Sabres don't have any other good goalie prospects. It's not that complicated. 1 1 Quote

COSabreFan Posted July 24 Report Posted July 24 Wonder when he and his agent will start asking the same question. Quote

They were not impressed with Levi's progress so Ellis was taken to replace him when the opportunity presented itself. Lyon will not be re-signed. I don't really like the hesitancy or long term thinking in the 3 goalie plan but it is what they are doing. Quote

Why he is here is because Jarmo saw potential in him. He said so himself. 1 Quote

It’s a combination of these two things. Quote

So I would argue that the question isn’t WHY is he here, but rather what will he make of his time in Buffalo. Nothing is predetermined. A player waived now has a chance to become a back up on a playoff contending team. Your actions not your circumstances defines who you are. this is EXACTLY the kind of material that I come to this space for, that was a fun 'lil read 1 1 Quote

dudacek Posted July 25 Report Posted July 25 I don’t see what the Sabres apparently see in Ellis. His play style looks so erratic; he seems rarely calm and set, and he lacks both the bulk (he’s listed as 6’1”) and the technique people typically associate with premier goalies. I’d like to hear an actual goalie coach break down his game, because to my uneducated eyes he’s just high-effort guy with some athleticism and a lot of technical flaws. And it’s not clear to me how he is going to get better as the third of three NHL goalies. People talked a lot about Levi not paying his dues. Over his 3 years pro, Levi has played 120 AHL games and 39 in the NHL. Ellis is a year older and has played just 64 AHL and 16 NHL games. Including ECHL, he’s played just 160 games total in the past 5 years. Looking at his total resume, he’s had one year - the AHL season prior to the Sabres claiming him - that suggests he has NHL potential. I like the kids attitude and I want him to succeed. Maybe there’s a great underdog story waiting to happen, but I’m not seeing reasons to think it will. Quote
