Taro T Posted July 16 Report Posted July 16 They start with a heavy home game contingent (5 of their 1st 6 are at home) and end with nearly as heavy of one (4 of their last 5 are home). Which means it'll seem like they're on the road a lot more than they're home the rest of the way because they actually are. Only 1 - 2 consecutive day homestand, which helps those of us that have a long drive in. And at least it's on a weekend (Friday and Saturday) which also makes it a bit easier. 2 - 5 game home stands and 2 - 4 game home stands. Get that they try to minimize travel costs and letting players stay at home for longer stretches. But the team and league really seem to dislike STHers. In that last category. Playing both Columbus Day and MLK Day at home in the early afternoon. They REALLY seem to dislike STHers. Or they expect we're all independently wealthy and don't need to work during the day on a weekday. Quote

People tend to take off on Columbus Day because of their kids being out of school. There are more and more companies also moving to Flex PTO so taking a day off of work isn't as big a deal. I do get the sentiment, but I am sure they view both of those days as ways to get more kids into the game and prime the future fan pipeline. Quote

Having weekend matinee games is, IMHO, a better way to get kids into the game. And the Sabres have the same number of those as they have non-holiday "holiday" matinee games this season. 1 Quote

Dahlin is a European star. We have Konsta, Östlund, UPL, and Kulich. I am not actually insinuating the Sabres are leaning into this concept because they’ve been doing home games on bank holidays for years, but I bet the NHL doesn’t mind this. 1 Quote

Would say you might be onto something with that thought. Except, they went from 6 matinee games with 2 more late afternoon games 3 years ago; to 7 matinee games with 2 more late afternoon games 2 years ago; to just 3 matinee games with 2 more late afternoon ones last year and this year. 8-9 "easy access" games 2 & 3 years ago to just 5 this year and last doesn't exactly scream "we need to be in Eurpoean markets." Yeah, they took a 2nd RS trip over to Europe this last season to start the season but even wtih those 2 games which are dictated by the league (and the Sabres were likely very happy to have the league buy a home game from them, like they do every time the Sabres "host" a stadium played game) they still aren't as accessible to Europeans as they were earlier. repster Posted July 17 Report Posted July 17 (edited) Noticeable how there’s only one 12:30pm/1pm kids takeover game on a Saturday or Sunday this year. I know 2 and 3 years ago they had at least 4. Maybe they anticipate adults will pay the (higher) price for night games with a winning team. Edited July 17 by repster Quote
Porous Five Hole Posted July 17 Report Posted July 17 I know the travel to/from Buffalo isn’t terrible because there are so many teams within a short flight, but tired = played last night. And rested = did not play last night. by that metric, the schedule isn’t favorable. 1 Quote

I don't get down quite as often but stay in town for a few days when I do and it's very ideal getting to see them play more than one game in a trip. Quote

Yeah, but you're going to your "vacation" home when you're in town. The rest of us either get the extra cost of an AirBnB or the exhaustion of driving 2 consecutive nights. (Which was nothing at all when back in this kid's 20's. Nowadays, it's draining.) 1 1 Quote

Out of these 12 games we are at a rest disadvantage, one-third of them are against divisional opponents and all but one on the road. So, @Montreal, @Tampa, @Boston and vs. the Laffs. I was going to say that the Sabres brass need to be more vocal with the league about this competitive disadvantage. Seeing Florida, Boston, Ottawa and Toronto having it worse though, makes me a little less bothered by it this year. The bigger problem for me is that this seems to happen every year. We never see a scenario like Montreal or Detroit has this year. Edited July 19 by repster Quote

Oddly enough, 1/3 of all their games are against divisional opponents. Quote
repster Posted July 19 Report Posted July 19 Where we have a rest advantage, only two games are against division opponents. That’s vs. Ottawa and vs. Detroit in the season finale. Quote

So they don't end up with the rounding error down to 1/3 of the games (3) vs tired opponents; they end up with the rounding error up to 1/3 of the games (2) vs tired opponents. The horror. 1 Quote
repster Posted July 19 Report Posted July 19 (edited) Like I said above, my main problem is the number of rest disadvantage games is always more than the rest advantage games every year, and I will continue to be unhappy about it every year. The Sabres did play well in back to backs last year though so maybe not the biggest deal. Edited July 19 by repster Quote
