To paraphrase the great Kevyn Adams, "We only want guys that want to be here."  It looks like Crevier wants to "be here."  I knew nothing about this player prior to the trade, but I like what I've seen so far.  He's big, he can skate a little bit, he has some hands (shootout video shoes that), he has a hard shot, and given his background as a 7th round pick, he's humble (as stated above) and has a very positive attitude.  He seems like he'll fit the role that Stanley was playing down the stretch, but at a smaller salary.  His tall stature will be a nice offset for Metsa's smaller stature.

As well as Zellweger's small stature.  Sigh...

With Dahlin, Power, Samuelsson and now Crevier, I think there's sufficient size on the blue line and Metsa and Zellweger being shorter shouldn't be that big of a deal. Timmins is big too and all the young defensemen in the pipeline are big guys.  Metsa has shown to be a very smart player who knows how to be in the right place at the right time and Zellweger will be on the move quite a bit, so hopefully he's not stationary in the defensive zone a whole lot.  Zellweger will probably be a liability in the defensive zone, but if he has a solid partner (Power?), some of that can be covered up.  Byram wasn't terrific defensively either, but did improve as he matured as a player, so hopefully Zellweger can do some of the same.   Per online stats, Byram is 3 inches taller and 12 pounds heavier than Zellweger, but Zellweger is only 22, so it's possible he can still add a little weight and muscle (he's not likely to get any taller).  Byram, at 25, is probably not going to grow much bigger.  And, to be clear, I'm not saying that Zellweger is as good of a player as Byram, nor is he an exact replacement, but he can still be a good player and replace some of what Byram brought to the table so that the loss of Byram won't be as big of a loss as it would have been if they had not acquired Zellweger.

Since size has come up again, I want everyone to remember that there are no less than 3 RHD and potentially as many as 6 that are all 6'2" or taller and will be available to Buffalo as soon as late March or April. Kleber, Mrtka, and Rudolph alone will all become available with Kleber the most likely to be NHL ready. That isn't even including Strbak and McCarthy in Rochester, or Komorov.

And he's better than Stanley.

I’ll believe size doesn’t matter when I see it. It’s not like Power, Dahlin and Samuelsson are Pronger, Scott Stevens (not large but probably the most viscous dman of the last 40 years) or Trouba. Sammy really improved his physical ability last season. Dahlin is more of a shut disturber than overly physical. Power, well we know what Owen is, and physical isn’t it. So basically Crevier, Samuelsson and Timmins are carrying the physical play on the back end. Metsa and Zellweger are tiny men, they have to overcome size with guile. When it works, its looks great. When it doesn’t, it gets ugly.

Maybe that’s enough. Really hinges on Mattias still carrying the physical play on the top pair. As long as he does that, the Sabres will be fine. He stops doing it or the injury history rears its ugly head, the Sabres physicality drops significantly.

Pronger was huge. I don’t know about viscous though.  Maybe his wife could speak to that.  He sure was vicious though.

Sorry, Ink. Had to.

I don’t mind you critiquing my autocorrect. I had no idea how to spell it, I threw some letters together that resembled what I wanted but alas viscous it was. I wonder if my algorithm is picking up how often I discuss viscosity at work and it’s trying to help.

Zellweger looked pretty thick in his presser. 🤷

Also is the most baby faced person I’ve ever seen.

I agree that the Sabres big defensemen are not bruisers or pugilists, but that's not as big a part of the game as it once was.  They re-signed Gilbert for that and I could see him inserted into the lineup against certain teams where a lot of fighting is anticipated.  Dahlin and Samuelsson are also pretty physical players, and while I don't know a ton about Crevier, I just don't see a lot of guys taking liberties with a guy that big, even if he's not a fighter.  Crevier's size alone is intimidating.  Even Power is stronger than he was in the past and is more prone to standing up for himself and teammates than he used to be.  And of course, there are several forwards who are not afraid to mix it up, even if they're not big dudes (Krebs and Benson come to mind), and Malenstyn, Carrick, and Doan will mix it up and aren't small.
