It always seems like the top teams Colorado, Vegas, both Florida teams let these guys walk or sign them to bargain deals. I feel like these types of contracts hinder us more than help unless were dealing McLeod and that's who he's replacing because if not where is he playing?

You mean like Tage Thompson's $7.1 million deal or Samuelsson's $4.3 million dollar one?

It's not a great contract for the Sabres, but it's not terrible either as long as he more or less maintains his production from last year (39 pts) -- which isn't a certainty since in the 3 previous seasons he put up 28, 17 and 26 pts.

They bought I think 2 of his UFA years, which was going to inflate the cost.  And he's one of their guys who plays really hard and burns to win -- the kind of guy that would've been a bigger loss than the stats might indicate, especially after losing Tuch and BB.  And he was terrific vs Boston in the playoffs before fading vs the Habs (like a number of his teammates).

I'm glad he's staying.  It sure seems like a trade to move out a forward will come at some point though.

Yup. If he signs a 2-year deal, it's very close to $4M (I'd guess just under). With where the cap will be this is your standard 3rd line salary.

Krebs/Wedge is the Unsung Hero of the Rebellion. Can't put a $ number on that.

I gotta say, if some of you are this worried about ever penny spent on player contracts, I worry about your ability to enjoy the sport at all.

I think it's natural for a fanbase that has never won a cup to be obnoxiously tuned into every little detail of the team. It's just the desperation we all feel showing up in a different way.

I don't see anything wrong with some people enjoying the Sabres but also being critical of other aspects. If we all thought the same that would be pretty lame at least imo. But i will admit it was hard for quite some time to enjoy watching the Sabres before the midseason point of this past year not going to lie.

For some of us, the team building aspect, the roster management aspect is something we like a lot.

It's like in video games. Some people want to pick up a controller and just play the game... That other people could care less about the game and want to build the franchise in some sort of franchise mode.

Those that worry about every dollar spent and where it's going... They are just enjoying the sport in a different way.

No issue with that contract at all. His game isn't flashy, but he does a lot of the little things that don't show up in the box score. Even with that said, he's durable and added 39 points while throwing 201 hits last year. Then added a couple of goals and 6 points in the playoffs. He's a good player and the kind of guy good teams need to have around.

15 forwards and 3 goalies....

Barring the big trade or preseason injuries, I figure one of the kids (Helenius) goes down and one of Danforth/Kozak (Danforth because of the injury) gets waived and clears to Rochester.

One nice thing about Krebs: his shot is no longer so weak as to be completely ignored by opposition defenders/goalies.

The Sabres have their 5 best forwards (Thompson, Norris, McLeod, Benson, Doan) 4 best D-men (Dahlin, Mule, Power, Zellweger) two valuable role players (Krebs, Malenstyn) and starting goalie (UPL) - in other words, the bones of a division winner - under contract for the next 3 seasons at $75M.

Next year they will have up to $40M space to supplement that core and the year after maybe $50M.

Anyone complaining how this salary will handcuff us is simply not paying attention.

This deal seems like a slight overpay, but given the 4-year term, it will be a slight overpay in the first year or two, and a slight bargain in the last year or two.  It will balance out in the end.  Krebs is a glue guy who gives 100% on every shift and he has a ton of versatility.  He hits, he skates well, he passes well, and has some scoring ability.  He's become a "closer" of sorts by scoring key empty-net goals to lock up games.  He's a great teammate and a good fit for the community.  He's also still relatively young and will likely continue to improve.  He's a core piece to one of the top-5 teams in the NHL.  Given all of that, although I don't LOVE the deal, I'm good with it.  Not every trade and every signing are going to be heavily one-sided in favor of the team or the player.  Many/most deals are each side giving a little bit.  Maybe the Sabres raised the AAV in exchange for another year or two of term.

LOL “$3.5 million what an amazing deal”

”$4.5 million what a disaster the team is screwed”

The cap is going up a lot each year and most of the key pieces are locked in at sweetheart deals. Take a breath people

You should give Franchise Hockey Manager a try if you haven’t.

He tosses kids pucks at every home game. He threw one to my son without us even asking, he just saw him watching him and threw one to an adult to give to him. He’ll always have a soft spot with me for that.

I'll admit it, I was expecting your kid to get clocked in the side of the head with that puck.

Expected $4M. I guess I can live with $4.5M.  Dude is a heart and soul player.

My feelings set to the tune of T'Pau's one-hit wonder - Heart and Soul. (fun fact - T'Pau is the name of Spock's mother from the orignal Star Trek).

Something in your limelight catches my eye
The shadow of a ‘JAG’ goes skating by
Looking for a little bit of game to grow, so
Give me 4-years, give me heart and soul
You never let me trade for a better player now
I'm tied to the hope that they could somehow
Hard on the heels of something more
But I gained your bond, heart and soul
The tear in my heart as you skate on by
I feel so low but  your head is high
Everything you do convinces me more
Please, give me goals, give me heart and soul
Looking to the day when I trade your pact
He wasn't  even looking; the GM slacked
You skate in a way that I've known before
Now I want your game, heart and soul

Terrible deal. Too much money AND term, unless he’s going to be traded. I would have offered $3x3 or bye-bye. He should be playing 4th line.

how much is Jarmo garnishing from your salary for this contract?

Maybe in line for where it should be, but not who it should be. This should be a contract the Jets, Flames, or 2015 Sabres deal out.

This isn't the type of deal you want an ascending team tight against the cap to use. We should have been using this money, in concert with dumping contracts like Zucker & McLeod to land a premium asset, not add more medicore players.

Reminds me of when the Bills bumped Tyler Matakevich from $2.5M to $3.5M for no reason, and then his next deal with the Steelers he was down to $600k. Same player the whole time, but smart franchises don't overvalue guys like that. I'm happy Krebs got paid, I just hate it's with us.

what premium asset is available for Zucker and MCleod? Do you think those two equal a premium asset?

If Östlund, Helenius, or Kulich stumble, Krebs can quite easily fill that spot for a good little while. He shouldn't be on the 1st line but he's a capable 3rd line player.

So clever. 🙄 It’s opportunity lost on using the cap money to get a top 6 player.
