PerreaultForever Posted July 7 Report Posted July 7 2 hours ago, Richard Noggin said: Agreed, but it's interesting to consider how difficult the Eastern Conference was last season, especially our division, and still the Sabres finished where they did, won a series with conviction, and then coulda/shoulda/woulda'd the 2nd round (with an honorable mention from the refs and the NHL). Can't historically predict the conference and the division will be THAT good again next season. The overall competition level is more likely to dip at least a little. The key is not to be part of the cohort responsible for that regression. It wasn't the refs, the difference was goaltending. In any event we'd have lost to Carolina too but that's all history so doesn't really matter. What matters is the division and the competition. Florida will be back in a big way. Ottawa looks like they might be better despite losing Tkachuk. If they get good goaltending all year they might rise higher. Montreal same as last year. Boston roughly same as last year. Tampa maybe slightly worse but maybe same as last year. Wildcard competition still hard to say until this Philly thing wraps up but they might be better if they get him. In any event I do not see the competition level dipping but rather increasing so we have to be better than last year and not just okay. 32 minutes ago, TageMVP said: Nah. UPL is gonna be back with a vengeance. I saw the way he threw his helmet after losing game 7. That's some real fire right there Old UPL alternating between good and bad years is GONE Count on it Krebs sucks Your faith in UPL is far greater than sanity allows. 1 Quote

Adams filled far more of those roles with kids that had little to no experience in those roles. A combo of Benson / Doan is going to be expected to backfill Tuch's role and then a kid or Krebs will be expected to backfill that slot. That weakens the club, but not most likely significantly. Zellweger &/or Crevier will be expected to backfill Byram which will almost definitely be a step back to where they were with Byram towards the end of the season. But the 3rd pairing very well could be giving them more than they got out of the 3rd pairing last year; mitigating some of that step back and maybe even 2 or so months into the season Zellweger and Power could be rounding into a solid pairing. Both backfills could end up a net positive by the time they're heading into the playoff stretch. Still want more moves, but it isn't like they need to be holding aces to have a chance at getting back into the dance. The more you type, the more I'm glad the Hellebuyck thing didn't pan out. Someone else here made a, or came close to making a, great point. Will the division be as competitive as last season? Personally haven't studied the potential, but if it won't be then even a 10 point drop-off from last season could still put them in the playoffs. Quote

Lol sounds like a line from some lame star wars movie Regarding UPL, how do you know these past playoffs won't be a career galvanizer for him? It was his first time in the playoffs, he's shown he can be a top 10 goalie several times in his career. Maybe the hiccups and growing pains of the playoffs are exactly what he needed. He's not some scrub Jonas Johansson type The answer is you don't know. Just like me You owe me a Brad Marchand black Bruins jersey if UPL has a goals against average under 2.55 and a save percentage of .910 or better for the year next year You prolly have 100 of those jerseys so it would be no big loss, if you lose Take the bet big guy Take it 1 Quote

I do have a Bergeron one and you ain't getting that for anything. Star Wars? FFS it wasn't from a movie but if it was you really got me pegged wrong. If you'd said David Lynch you might have been on to something but Star Wars? Oh man, not this guy. I've seen 2 and a half of them a long long time ago and that's it. I have zero faith in UPL. I am happy to be surprised if we are in fact stuck with him but if you've noticed I really want them to make a Hellybuck deal. 1 Quote

Personally haven't studied the potential, but if it won't be then even a 10 point drop-off from last season could still put them in the playoffs. Neglecting the effects of the 2 extra games on what point totals will get you into the dance, a 0.600 NHL winning percentage effectively guarantees a playoff spot (only the '70 Habs missed out and they were tied for the last playoff spot that year); 99 is above that threshold in an 82 game season and that is the 10 point drop off from last year. They need 102 to be above that threshold this year; but they have 2 extra games to find those 3 extra points over 99. Still would like to have ended up with Hellebucyk but looking like it isn't meant to be. They CAN make the playoffs without him. But it'll be close and they can't have more than 2 or 3 big things go wrong. (But in past years, they pretty much had no room for error; so they're in better shape IMHO even without Tuch and Byram and Greenway.) 1 Quote

Some waiting for that offer sheet to resolve. If for example Philly gets him, they might plan on shedding some salary to sign Zegras and Drysdale. Maybe Jarmo swoops in on a guy like Tippett to fill Tuch's spot. Just as an example. Many dominos waiting to fall all over. 2 Quote

dudacek Posted July 8 Report Posted July 8 (edited) Random thought: How come when people pitch their rosters, you never see Krebs pencilled into the 3rd-line LW slot? I mean he grinds like an 3rd liner and he scores like an 3rd liner. Isn’t that what he is, a good 3rd-line winger? You always see posts about “he’s not good enough to be on the top line” or “I don’t want to pay that much for my 4th line” Would anyone be upset to see him skating a regular shift alongside McLeod? Is it just because Lindy rarely seems to use him in that role? Edited July 8 by dudacek 3 Quote

Archie Lee Posted July 8 Report Posted July 8 (edited) 34 minutes ago, SDS said: Not exactly a rebuttal now is it? Last season, Krebs finished 169th in scoring among NHL forwards with 39 points. He did play all 82 games, but the first 29 games of the year were largely on line 4, where he had 8 assists. Over the last 53 games he had 12 goals and 19 assists, for a 48 point pace. Of the 168 forwards who finished with more points than Krebs last season, only 4 (four) averaged less than 60 seconds per game on the PP (Protas in Wash was the lowest, averaging 28 seconds per game on the PP). Krebs had next to no PP time, averaging only 5 seconds per game on the PP. Last season, all things considered, Krebs scored like a low-end 2nd line forward over the course of his full 82 games. Over the last 53 games of the season, when he played high in the line-up, and despite getting no PP time, he scored like a mid-to-high-end 2nd liner. Edited July 8 by Archie Lee 2 1 1 Quote
