$18MM/per for Carlsson is NUTS. He looks like he's going to be pretty good, but highest paid in the NHL? WTF, man? That screws over the Ducks and I'll bet pissed off a lot of GMs around the league. Philly just reset the market in a way that's going to make things more difficult for a lot of teams moving forward.

I thought $12.5 per year for Byram was nuts.

Offer sheets have to be stupid, otherwise the original team would just match them. This certainly makes an awkward decision for the Ducks. How many firsts is 2OA worth? What about the additional cap space you recover?

I wonder how different Sabre history would of been if we let Vanek walk and took the four firsts from Anaheim

Wasn’t it Edmonton?  And I always thought we should’ve taken the picks.

Its not just the picks. Its your salary structure going forward.  Eventually when you DO become a cap team, putting the best team together isn't just about pure talent, it is are you overpaying for that talent or not (vs what the rest of the league is paying for similar players).

To contend for a cup, its likely you are going to have to be a cap team or near a cap team. When you are at that level it hurts you a LOT if you are paying that much more for players of similar quailty that other teams are paying less for.

You may be correct that even the 4 draft picks will not get you back what Carlsson is...but this just puts Anaheim in a tough spot. If they decline and let him go to Philly, it puts Philly in a tough spot (not seeing how they would be able to keep Michkov in that case)

I think Carolina is the first team in the cap era that didn’t have a player in the top of the league salaries.

I do not believe Gauthier is eligible for an offer sheet but that’s a Taro question.

You’re right. He is not eligible.

From Dreger:

This will certainly juice the market according to several player agents.  Carlsson had 4 teams present Offer Sheets and several who shard a high level of interest.

4 teams offered him.

I predicted in another thread that Carllson would be the guy but that’s because I thought Bedard would already be signed. This could get interesting.

No one is going to bother with Bedard because Chicago has almost $30 million in cap space. He can’t be poached. I’m not convinced that any GM is going to invest the time if there isn’t at least a slight chance of landing the player.

I have to admit it, this was pretty brilliant by Briere, knowing they won't be able to come close to getting a talent like Carlsson where they pick for the next 4 seasons (most likely in the 15-25 range) so they swing big. The only negative impact this has is if Carlsson gets matched (I think he will) by the Ducks and Michkov has better stats than Carlsson in his first 2 seasons so if I'm the agent of Michkov I'm saying "Yeah our client put up more points in 3 seasons than the guy you offered 18M per season to, we want 19M per or we walk".

Plus there are rumors he hurt himself while training yesterday

He was under 20 yo when he signed his 1st contract, so he needs 3 years of experience to be able to sign an offer sheet.  He only had 1 game of pro experience (1 NHL game) in his 1st contract year, so he didn't get credited for a year of pro experience for that one.  He has 2 years to his credit which isn't enough.

So, no, he is not eligible to receive an offer sheet.

Aho makes negligibly different than Barkov and Eichel. If Carolina counts so does Florida and Vegas lol

Barkov and Jack at 10 and Aho at 9.75 is a meaningless differential. None of the 3 in the top 10 contracts at the time they won either

Is 90% of a max offer what a point per game player costs now, or are there intangibles I'm missing?

Connor McDavid just signed a 2 year extension for 12.5 AAV.

I don’t even understand how and why they would offer him that much

It's a Phlyer thing.  Create chaos by giving ridiculously large offer sheets to players.

It doesn't have to make sense.  It rarely does.

As I was typing I was thinking I was wrong on Aho. But they were close and I wouldn’t bet that Carlsson is still top ten when he’s ready to win the Cup. There will be two or three contracts higher before training camp, if not more.
