SabreFinn Posted July 8 Report Posted July 8 Carlsson might be the closest to Barkov you can get, and he is still young. And Barkov need no further presentation. Carlsson is definitely not worth the money offered, but the question is what a cup is worth, cuz I could bet on he will get one in ten years. Quote
pi2000 Posted July 8 Report Posted July 8 If Anaheim was going to match, why haven't they done so already? Quote

Seems to be a custom to stick it to the team who signed the offer sheet and an effort to exhaust all possible angles before finalizing anything. Same reason Barrett Hayton’s simple, cheap one-year offer sheet wasn’t matched immediately. 1 1 Quote

The Thompson and Samuelson contracts would fit your description though. Sabres could have bridged both those guys. The salary might be market now. In three years who knows. The length is what I like. Those deals will be bargains in three years if things keep progressing with salaries league wide and the cap going up. 1 Quote

That is insane for a top line 80pt forward and a #2 defender with 40pts. Quote

I'm not suggesting they do this, but they could give Quinn, Östlund, and Kulich, versions of the Doan/Benson deals right now, and still have more space than they could likely use next season (without a big outside addition). And they would have far more than enough space to give Helenius a comparable deal a year from now. Quote

This is why how Jarmo navigated this off season was so key He did not tie up 12-14 million in Byram and 10.5 million in Tuch just excellent long term management here Quote
Eleven Posted July 9 Report Posted July 9 So back to the topic...the Ducks have about 18 hours or so to decide? Quote

sabrefanday1 Posted July 9 Report Posted July 9 Think this is their best move as if Philly is any good moving forward as the first round picks would be higher up and we all know that late first rounders are not always a sure bet and then you have to wait years for them to hopefully develop. The Ducks need this guy now so I gues they had no choice. Now they are in cap-hell and sure must be cursing Briere right about now. The guy has single-handledly put the whole NHL salary structure out of whack. 18 mill is abusrd for this guy. TSN reported that other teams also submitted offers but nowhere near this. At least there are other gM's with better logic then Briere. Quote
Eleven Posted July 9 Report Posted July 9 There might be three players in this league that I would be willing to trade 4 firsts for. Maybe. Anaheim just effectively did that. Dummies. Quote
LGR4GM Posted July 9 Report Posted July 9 It hurts their cap but I would have matched. I would have signed him before this but ya 2 Quote

HumanSlinky39 Posted July 9 Report Posted July 9 They're gonna have to pay Gauthier soon, too. Philly impregnated them. Twice. Quote

If they match on Carlsson, how much do they pay Gauthier? They are both top 5 overall picks, both within one year of age of each other, Gauthier just came off of a 40 goal season, one that he started playing at age 21. If you end of paying Carlsson all that money, doesn't Gauthier want to be at worst within $1-2m per year of him? Quote

It was the owner of Philly allowing Briere to make that offer that has screwed al other GMs moving forward... Quote

Gauthier's a winger, so probably a little bit lower, but I wouldn't be surprised if he demands $14-15MM per. The Flyers completely screwed Anaheim. I think Carlsson is going to be really good, and in a few years that contract might not look too bad, but the next 2-3 years at least just got very, very dicey for them right when they appeared to be on a good trajectory. oddoublee Posted July 9 Report Posted July 9 They made the right move. Simplest thought, bird in the hand is worth 4 in the bush. I think that's the saying... But really....he is going to be really really great. You keep players like him if you have the cap space. Quote

If he requests that money, they laugh in his face. He has no leverage to get anywhere near that. If he wants to look around the league for comparables, he needs to look to guys who re-signed with their own teams without hitting the market, players like Demidov. He isn't able to negotiate with anyone else. 1 1 Quote
