It definitely did have a tone of "we've given the best offer we're going to make and it hasn't been enough to date" to it.

I also think that it will eventually be enough.  Maybe throw in a 2028 third round pick to show concession.

That was the sense I got.

I read that Chevy over in Winnipeg also had a press conference scheduled for yesterday but pushed it off to tomorrow.  I suspect the Helly trade is nearly done but not quite there yet and Cheveldayoff and Kekäläinen scheduled pressers to announce it.  Jarmo went ahead and did his, Chevy pushed it off in anticipation of the trade being completed by tomorrow.

From what has been said elsewhere on Sabrespace, I think if the Helly trade goes through, the Sabres will also sign Patrick Kane.  They might sign him anyway, but moving Quinn or another forward in the trade makes a spot for Kane.

Wishful thinking but unfortunately not likely.  How would you be confident that a trade would be completed tomorrow when it's not completed today, unless, I guess you are waiting on a NMC decision or two, and have a contingency plan if not waived.  Peg reporters also insinuated Chevy had a family thing come up and pushed the presser a day back

Regardless if he did or not, he brushed past it with little explanation in the press conference. If you are bringing in a class A scumbag, at least have a story prepared for why you did so.

Jarmo has no idea the powder keg he lit with this hire.  It’s just a matter of time before the fuse expires.

I think you're overblowing the situation.  I don't think any Sabres fan is going to abandon their fandom of the team over this.  It's likely this is the last time we'll hear Lucic's name going forward.  It'll just be "a recommendation of the scouting department."

I'm not sure what Jarmo's criteria for hiring a scout was and who else was considered, but he seems to think the guy he hired will benefit the Sabres which, in the end, is what I really care about.

Eh, whatever.  I'm on the fence relative to the trade anyway.  But I suspect ultimately it will go through, not sure why, just my gut feeling.

I don't really want to give up a bunch for a goalie that might not make any difference.

History has shown us plenty of examples of teams that prioritized the non goalie positions and won cups by simply getting average to good goaltending and then had a goalie that played well in the playoffs.

Osgood with Detroit, Fleury with Pens and Vegas, Anderson/Bussi and Hill in this year's finals, etc...

I don't think the "elite goalie" is the way to go anymore, certainly not at the cap hit it would cost and the amount of assets we would need to move for something that is unlikely to make much of a difference overall.

I think the bigger issue most people have is the domestic violence thing.

The charges were dropped in an incident that happened a more than two years ago. It's clear he was involved in a domestic incident where alcohol was a factor. So, I'm not saying otherwise. But that doesn't automatically mean that after two years he hasn't rehabilitated and cleaned up his act. I have little regard for abusers but that doesn't mean that a person should forever be tainted even after getting back on the right path.

Did I miss the memo where Fleury was no longer a guaranteed first ballot HOF goalie?

Is there an argument to just keep the 3 stud Defensive prospects (Mrtka, Kleber and Rudolph) and one day have the best defensive core the NHL has ever seen?

all RHD I believe though?  Leber might be a LHD??

Well, at the moment we are a little worse than last year.

Florida is better (unless their goaltending craps out). Tampa is the same, older or maybe slightly worse. Toronto? Better but I could see the whole thing falling apart. Boston's about the same. Ottawa is hard to say the Tkachuk impact but the roster is decent. Montreal the same. Detroit is a mess.

I think, at the moment, we are a bubble team and it'll go down to the end of the year and to who stays healthiest.

That is unless Östlund, Kulich, and Helenius all take great leaps forward but having that much faith/expectation on kids is usually folly (as we saw when we ran the Peterka-Cozens-Quinn kid line before).

imo Jarmo still needs to pull off a big move.

To be fair, Florida didn’t fall off they just had a ridiculous amount of injuries. Barkov is ridiculously good, top five center in the world. (This isn’t for you, I know you know this)

For Kulich, it's just get back to where he was.

And Dahlin, Samuelsson and Power all shoot left.

Absolutely. When I said "better" I just meant better than last year but most of it is for those reasons. Barkov to me is the best 2 way center in the world.

They should draft a D man top 5 next year too if they can.

That will work while they are young, but by their 2nd contract they will be limited in their earnings by how they are slotted among the “best defensive core the NHL has ever seen” and we’ll lose them to higher ambition, a la Bowen Byram.

Take advantage of the short time they are cost controlled, but move them before they force it.

We could ice an all D man 5 man unit.  It would be 4D innovation.
