I have said this many times on Quinn.

He need time to recover not only from the Achilles and additional lbi’s, but also from the missed offseason workouts while recovering.

IMO that has put his development back.  The last two years his body couldn’t do what his mind saw for him to do.

This year his body caught up, especially in the playoffs.  But IMO his mind and shot development have been set back by the physical injury.

Next year he pots 25-30 and then we can have a realistic convo about the ceiling.  He is a very unique case.  Now finally fully healthy, let’s see what happens.

I think he’s a solid 25 goalscorer, with a couple 30-35 goal seasons.

I expect next season he’ll solidify himself as a full time 2nd line winger with the ability to spell time on the 1st line.

Funny thing is (compared to the opening statement) when we had the kid line of Peterka Cozens Quinn I thought Peterka was going to be better than Quinn. I think he probably still is but we shall have to see if he thrives or flounders in Boston's system.

Quinn was better at times last year but for me he still tries too many solo plays that fail and gives the puck away too much. Poor defensive effort at times as well. I don't know if that will ever change so for me he's not a core piece of this team going forward.

Peterka plays a 1 dimensional rush game. It's why he got Demoted from their 1st to 4th line.

Well that's the interesting thing I'm waiting to see on. He plays that way because that's what we asked him to play. I've heard things out of Boston where they expect a different game. Boston's new assistant McIlvane apparently coached Peterka as a teen. He believes Peterka has a complete game in him. Could be PR garbage after a trade but it is a curious connection.

I think if Quinn just let more shots go as soon as the puck hit his stick he could get to 30 goals. He waits and trys to pick his shots almost all of the time. It allows the defense and goaltenders enough time to interfere with his shot. Peterka is the opposite. One thing on his early scouting reports that sticks with me is that he tends to glide into his shots. If he has time to do that it works well because is an accurate shooter. How often does he have time?

His play last year was much better overall. He was better away from the puck, not just standing around all the time. He played along the wall more often. Not always great at it but at least he was more physical than he had been. Certainly helped us win shootouts which adds value. Overall he was just more engaged and very productive for current cost as a 3rd line wing.

The question is he is in the 2nd year of the bridge contract. What happens now? Next year is he another 7 plus million dollar forward? It looks like that was considered in the trade rumors. You would think he is playing for the contract he thinks he deserves this year. We just lost our best right wing. Can he produce more inspite of tougher minutes? He just has not lived up to that number 8 overall pick. If he is going to show it now would be a good time to do it.

I said a long time ago that I thought Quinn was better than Peterka and then for about 2 years that looked like total BS. Quinn ruptured his Achilles during offseason training and then spent quite a bit of time just getting back to the player we thought he could be.

The real question is how good or bad is he and will he be this upcoming season? I was surprised to see that Quinn didn't get that many sheltered zone starts with only 59.1% of them coming in the offensive zone. His xgf split was only -0.7 which is way better than the -12.8 from the previous year. He also got 20g for the first time which is actually very interesting. His career shooting% is 11.8 but last year he only shot 10.5 which means he left almost 3 entire goals on the table! wooo but in all seriousness he took more shots than he ever had last year and still undershot his career % meaning if he can up his shot total a little bit and shoot a little better, 25g is well within his wheelhouse. His TOI was about the same with him averaging about 1 extra shift a game and more in line with his 22yr old season. His CF% was almost the exact same as his last 3 years as well.

So the shot% was down a bit, the shot total was up, the rest of the stats are about the same with the biggest jump in his quality of shots for and against. He went way up in the xGF department and edged up a bit in the xGA department. Overall he was a high event guy who gave as good as he got. Basically he was middle of the road in terms of chances.

My question then becomes, does Quinn have another level of player? Is he a middle six, 25g, 50ish point winger that doesn't really hurt you while on the ice and can score some nice goals or is there more to give. I don't really have an answer, just curious if we think he is roughly want he will be or is there more there.

Interesting question... Quinn came out of the draft as an underdeveloped but skilled guy who hadnt concentrated on hockey til his junior year in HS.  As you stated he ruptured his achilles which can take a while to recover from... see Tre White Of the Bills, yet he is still young... imo injury really set him back... we saw toward the end of the season and into the playoffs he started to show possibilities of taking another step... imo he has another level... how high it is not sure but if his defensive game improves it may get him more playing time and he has a reputation as a gym rat that has been learning how best to push himself and came off a little gun shy after the injury.  If he can recapture that level of moxy he had before the injury I would expect a significant jump.

I feel like Quinn's ceiling is a Pominville type player... nifty 3rd/2nd line winger 50-55 points 20 goals and a bit of a liability in the corners and the defensive zone.  If you have a Quinn as a 3rd line winger with that kind of production you are a pretty good team.  He is not going to be on your first line... he may fill in on the second due to injury or a quick line shakeup.   Its going to be the money.. he would be an RFA, I may let those waters get tested and see what turns up either affordable, or the picks are more appealing... but I do know we need to get our CAP in line. So I am not rushing to sign him to a big extension.

interesting comp.

i'll say: pominville in his prime was a very good 2nd line winger.

and i'll add: 20 goals and 55 points is a very good 2nd line wing.

So I am with you here  , he absolutely could play 2nd line... on a Championship team probably need to upgrade... So when we took our deep playoff runs our 3rd line was Vanek Roy and Pommer...  so if you have that you have a really good team ... I think lastly Quinn is close to but probably not going to hit the Pominville level... at least consistently...

Jury is still out on JJP but they are certainly deliberating... I am interested to see what Boston turns him into... I feel like he will become a more rounded player... or he will be seeking his 4th team in 2027 or 8.

IMHO, Quinn has a ton of skill, great hands, very good feet and very good hockey IQ.  I think his ceiling is very good 2nd line winger to so-so top line winger.  He turned a corner in the 2nd half of last season and resumed the career arc he seemed to be on prior to the achilles injury -- i.e. burgeoning star.  I would only trade him, reluctantly, if necessary to bring in a true star player.

I think his next step is adding toughness, both mental and physical.  Those shortcomings were exposed in the playoffs.  He's not strong enough yet on the puck, and while he was usually in the right place, he wasn't quite focused enough to finish the chances he was in on.

I think he's got the kind of mentality that will drive him to improve, so I expect him to be better this coming season, both in the RS and in the playoffs.

If he somehow could add these dimensions to his game then that would be a huge bonus and will boost his contribution.  I just wonder about developing mental and physical toughness... time will tell.

Snakebite is the perfect description of him in the playoffs. He was everywhere but couldn’t find that first goal. I kept watching him saying that once he scored, he’d get 6. He was the one who scored the ridiculous goalie interference goal, right? Even when he finally scores, they come up with a crazy reason to take it away.

Carolina's starting RW this past season was Jordan Martinook who had 12g and 29pts. The other winger was Will Carrier with his 18pts. Jackson Blake (53pts) and Taylor Hall (48pts) were the 2nd line wingers. The suggestion that Jack Quinn is not a 2nd line player at this stage is just false. We can argue about his defensive game (which seems fairly average) but he grades out as a 2nd line winger.

well put. i noticed this dynamic as well.

I noticed it too and was glad to see. Previously after Quinn scored he always had that ‘aw shucks’ boyish grin on his face. If you are able, go back and watch his expression and reaction after his two goals in game 6 of the MTL series.
Intensity like which I’ve never seen from him before. It’s almost as if he grew from a boy to a man in that series.

You gotta remember our demographic.

Most of Sabrespace grew up in an era when 50 points really was a 3rd line total.

It’s hard to let go of where you came from.

Was saying the same thing.

And the way his playoffs went, could it have been any other Sabre to have the ref initially take the goal away, have the league give it back, only to have the ref get his way in the end?
