I guess it's a good thing they get their really good players to sign long term extremely cap-friendly deals so they can "overpay" 500K-1 million for these players instead of paying them 3-5 million a year more?

Sabres 4th line was outstanding and Beck was a big part of that. With  a healthy Carrick this is great news 👍

Totally disagree… In a world where michael Kessel ring gets 4.5 million for literally being cannon fodder on the bench and sucking a whole year… $3 million for your best checking player that’s less than 1/33 at the cap is totally fine… Happy to have him for six years

 

Fox also knew to readjust folks to what players are going to cost with the cap rising so much

I often agree with you, but I dissent here. It's odd, because you have stressed the need for grit and physicality which Beck brought in spades. Unless you think last year was an abberation, this seems like a good signing to me.

Love this. Beck is a heart and soul type that will do anything to help the team win.  I’d have been really disappointed if we had lost him.  6 years is surprising but the cap will go up.  I viewed him as a core player as the checking line really made a nice impact this season and he was the catalyst imo

Assuming the term is correct, I agree it's a bit long for a fourth line guy. Malenstyn is a locker room guy, though. I was a bit surprised to recognize that during the, I think, post-season interview.

But he is a machine in his role and perhaps the coaches think he has more to give.

Carrick's salary is 1 M.  Anything over 2 for a 4th liner is an overpay.

You can't balance a cap long term doing this. Kesselring is not a 4th line player he's being paid at the current 3rd pairing right shot D man rate (roughly and considering he had some leverage with this situation). They aren't comparables. Mark Kastelic is a decent comparable. He makes 1.5  with inflation Beck could have 2 and that would be a fair deal. The term is also questionable.

He’s going to be making the equivalent of $2M or less by the third year of the deal. It’s the going rate.

You've got a guy who fits in perfectly as a 4th line W on your team in the system you like to play.

Not sure how much sense it makes to lock up 4th liners until they're 34.  But, if they expect his play to not tail off too far when he's in his 30's, am ok with the price tag because of how long the deal is and how much the cap is going up.  Like @tom webster said, this is essentially going to be the equivalent of $2MM/yr by the 3rd or 4th year which is a smidge pricy for a 4th liner, but again he fits in perfectly as a 4th liner on this team.  As long as they aren't giving him a NTC/NMC, they should be able to get out of it if it starts to look bad around year 4 or 5 (and unlike Greenway's deal, they'd at that point likely have to pay someone to take a bad contract because he's starting from a point of being a 4th liner, not a guy that could easily be a 3rd liner).

Guessing Carrick can expect about $4MM/year now when his contract's up in a year.

Interesting how the team building philosophy of find guys you like and work in your system and then lock them up long term hasn't particularly changed at all with the new management coming in.  If anything, it's become even more ingrained.

Don't even want to think about what this means for what Krebs' deal will look like.  That'll only be buying 2 RFA years.
