Aside from them both being in our top 5-6 players overall, they were also both important off-ice culture guys. Lots of offseason left, and lots of talent still here, but hard to spin this as positive when it comes to the coming year.

Not a comment about the sufficiency of what has been received for Byram and Tuch, but definitely a depressing couple of days to see two very good players leaving after making the playoffs and having a very good season.

The problem for them is that if they're still in Ovechkin Record Mode, they're doomed. If he retires and they just go Full-Protas, fine. That's a division that is easily won (playoff made, not won, for the next 2 seasons) and Tuch will help them do that.

But the longer they keep Ovechkin and Tuch together, the less effective they'll be as once washes out (legend that he is) and the other slows into a 2nd, and then 3rd liner.

The Sabres Cup window has absolutely nothing to do with Tuch.

As much as I love the whole Tuch Icewalker, Reino Samidala, Goalless Levi, Sheevyn, SW storyline.

It makes sense for Washington. Keep trying to win another one with Ovi while you can, deal with the consequences of the inevitable rebuild later. The Tuch contract hurts them a lot less than it would have hurt us.

it was going to be shattered if they paid Tuch that much money and didn't luck into an elite goaltender along the way.

The team in front of the goalies wasn't good enough with Tuch, paying him that much money wasn't going to help. Now they have the flexibility to make more moves.  I'm not saying they WILL be better for sure, but with him making that much money here, they weren't going to be good enough without enough money to improve across the roster.

This, Byram, Greenway and Kesselring have certainly quieted those concerns.

Turning a UFA and three UFAs to be into 4, 20, 45, Crevier and whatever this is is good asset management, IMO.

Now get out there and do some more spending.

It IS preserving future value.  (And they gave up 27 as well, btw.)

Whether they do enough to preserve present value will determine whether it is in fact good or poor asset management.

Trochek has 3 years left at $5.6M.

Very much fits into the budget and adds the defence-first veteran centre.

It would almost certainly mean another centre going out though.

Not sure if you’re just trying to get the masses to react or not.  Tuch wanted the Kempe-like deal and the Sabres could have given him that way before the season ended.  
 

They had the money and the cap room, the term was always considered to be a problem.
