I like Kevin Weekes but this is not news.

Meaning...?

I mean we knew Jarmo would be working on it, but I haven't seen it confirmed a deal was close, or the parameters, anywhere else.

A) He doesn’t say anything is close

B) Those numbers are what most reputable sites have projected. It’s when used that number in my contest thread. Matt Bove used that number in his mock off-season yesterday as well as others.

but but but I was told Jarmo is awful and destroying the team.

Would be a huge deal to get locked in.  Benson will outplay that contraact in short order.  Would be huge

lol.  A monkey would know to resign Benson.

You're right, he doesn't say anything is close. But citing sources and putting the numbers out there certainly implies that there is a willingness on both sides to get something done within that ballpark. Which, in turn, implies close.

Do you think he's just pretending to be in the know and just regurgitating the same educated guesses others have made?

I have not seen enough of Jarmo to make a full determination of how good or bad of a GM he is.  He does have a strong presence and speaks with conviction, which is something that Adams seemed to lack, and I think the players have responded well to it.  I haven't been highly impressed with the return on his trades so far, but there's still a lot of work to be done and early moves (like Kesselring and 27 for 20) are a precursor to later moves, so the entire picture is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of a move.  I wouldn't dole our major credit to Jarmo if he gets Benson signed at 7 x 7.  There's nothing wrong with that deal, it's a necessary and fair deal for both sides, but I don't think it's any kind of GM wizardry or that he pulled off a major coup.  Assuming it gets done, he did what was expected and what he was supposed to do.  Now if he can find a way sign Benson and to also extend Byram and sign Tuch, Malenstyn, and Krebs, and improve the goaltending, I'll be extremely impressed.  Unloading Norris' and Greenway's contracts to fund these other signings would be impressive too.  I like Norris and Greenway as players, but their costs are too high for the limited return they provide in the ice due to injuries (both, but mostly Norris) and inconsistent play (both, but mostly Greenway).

Everything is breaking news for Weekes it’s his calling card.

The fact that Chad mentioned it’s close carries more weight in my opinion

I really don’t know his motivation I just know that it’s been pretty much understood it was a priority and getting a deal almost identical to Doan’s made sense. My only point was that nothing he said was newsworthy

Why can't we? It's still before July 1.

The rumor says it’s 7. I wish it was 8 at that number. My comment wasn’t exactly rocket science.

You're correct. It did say 7 x 7. But They could go 8 if they finish before July 1. Then again, maybe Benny wants to get to free agency sooner.

65-point winger Alex Tuch is going to get $10M.

Considering an average player salary will be $5.9M in  few years, probably quite a few.

People continue to view contracts through the flat cap.

Tuch has consistently done that for multiple years and is a tremendous PK forward with size. So perhaps a 55 point player would have been a better way to say it. Benson for his potential hasn’t hit even 50 points. To be 21 with basically one year in the books and getting a guaranteed $49m .. then being free at 28 (with as you note cap expansion) is a very good deal imho.

Why would Benson do this?

Because if he doesn't he gets a much lower bridge deal. Something 7X7 ish makes him 27 when it's over and at prime age for another big (potentially much bigger if he's good) deal when it expires and he'll have full control then. It would be a good move for him and for the Sabres.

and he can buy his own carnival 🙂
