We'll never know, but I doubt Jarmo was taken by surprise.  BB probably refused to negotiate all year, and it's been clear for months that Tuch was going to be the top UFA forward in a rising cap situation -- and I'm pretty confident that he made it clear to Jarmo all year that the Sabres would need to at least come close to Kempe's deal.

All of this.

And one more huge difference between Black Sunday and today:  Black Sunday happened because of cheapness and sheer incompetence.  Briere would've signed for $25MM in the summer of 2006, but Quinn and Darcy decided that he wasn't essential, and Drury was ready to sign for $21MM in the fall of 2006, but Golisano jerked him around for a few months and then Drury got fed up and bailed.

Black Sunday was also, as Taro notes, just the worst single episode in the dismantling of the best and most exciting Sabres team in a generation, with the completely unnecessary losses of McKee, Grier, Dumont and Soupy rounding out the homicide.

The only incompetence this time around was KA's in failing to get Tuch or Byram extended AND in giving Byram only a 2-year bridge deal that walked him to UFA.

And Jarmo seems to have cultivated a bidding war for BB that yielded an excellent package in return

I agree that Briere and Drury were their 2 best players.  Only Miller would have a legit argument to be included.

Tuch was IMHO one of the Sabres' best players, but not their best forward and I'd say not in the top 5 overall -- I'd rank them, last season, as Dahlin, TT, Benson, Byram and Power, and then Tuch.

The one thing I would say is that Byram knew what he wanted and Adams choice was either to trade him last year or give him the 2 years. It worked out ok. We got a good year and a good return.

SO Benson got 3.75million today because of his signing bonus, correct?

Oh man, I hope he doesn't overdose on sugar.

Can buy a lot of Skittles with that kind of coin.

At least the local Timmy Ho’s is safe with Skittles.

Step aside, Tim Horton's. Here comes Benny's mini doughnuts!

When I first saw your post before clicking the link my immediate reaction was I’d drive four hours for Benson’s Beignets (workshopping the title). Might need to plan a Canadian Carnival roadtrip instead.

I really hope he’s a Sabre for life.

Me too.

However, I was a bit disappointed by the article’s description of the Benson family, which made them sound like fair operator moguls. I kinda had a mental image of Benson’s youth along the lines of Brad Pitt’s community in the movie “*****” (or “Sn@tch”) if the filter censors it — either way it’s an excellent movie.)
