That's what you think.  WGR means a lot to the people of Grand Rapids.  But we don't consider ourselves part of Michigan, do we?

Lake George shouldn't be on there. Its in the Adirondacks. South of there is the Capital District.

Most of my friends from Syracuse do not root for the Sabres. It's either Tampa because of the Crunch or Montreal or the Rangers. The latter 2 with the original 6 influence.

Yes and No,

Culturally Syracuse is far closer to Buffalo & Rochester than it is to NYC however it lies at the border of many language changeovers such as the POP vs SODA crossover. 

Sports wise they are an extremely mixed bag as they, as Jorcus mentioned, being that they are pretty much dead center between 4 teams and have an AHL affiliate to a 5th. Baseball they likely lean to the Mets due to their AAA affiliate but the Yankees likely have a large base of fans too. Football, I'd guess the Bills have a slightly larger share than either NYC pretender team but it likely varies by demographics.

Syracuse is effectively the borderline and convergence point of WNY, the Finger lake region (Central/Middle NY) and the Appalachian/Albany people

This makes no sense to me.  The finger lakes region is between central and western NY.  Their cant be a convergence point where central, finger lakes, and western meet.

And tell an Appalachian that they are paired up with Albany and you might have bodily harm threatened upon you LOL.

I wouldn't expect an Appalachian to understand common English.  Maybe Pittsburgh English.  MAYBE.

You have to look at it culturally and geographically.  

Western NY is 8 counties - Erie, Niagara, Orleans, Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Genesee, and Wyoming.   

Rochester is culturally similar to WNY but it is not WNY.  It is very close and similar, like a cousin.   Rochester is in Monroe County and that is considered the Finger Lakes Region.  

Syracuse has become more culturally linked to WNY than it was in the 70's and 80's, so I am told.   But Syracuse is not WNY.

Moved from Rochester to Syracuse in 1979.  Was shocked it wasn’t the Bills country I was accustomed to.   It was over 50% NYG followed by a split between Jets and Bills.   It’s the opposite now but largely because the Bills are winning.  
 

Sabres fans came out of the closet this year for the same reason.  Lots of Ranger fans here.   The Giants and Ranger fandom has been passed down by the parents / grandparents who were fans in the 60’s.   Crunch STH are largely TB fans but that’s about it.
