Sabres Fan in NS Posted June 17 Report Posted June 17 I did not realize there was a thread for this ... I am officially done with the NHL and bloody hell Sportsnet. Killing HNIC on CBC is the last straw. Makes no difference that I have not spent a Saturday night with HNIC on the TV (no TV) for over 25 years. It was a tradition of my youth and young adulthood. I am still a fan of the Sabres and the sport, but I am going to focus on The Mooseheads from now on. Still hoping for a Sabre cup win, but nothing else about the NHL. For TSN it was their support for the new ridiculous rule changes which ruin the CFL game. For Sportsnet it was their inability to allow the CBC to broadcast Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday nights like they have since 1936. And also Sportsnet’s upcoming crazy price increases. I won’t support that. Still a Sabres fan, but becoming less of an NHL fan every year when we get increasingly screwed. 1 Quote

I live in Niagara county (northern) and with an antenna, you could pick it up in crystal clear HD, better than any compressed signal that goes over cable. 2 1 Quote

Everytime I hear a fan talking about growing the game, I ask them WTF are they talking about?!?! The only people that benefit from growing the game are the owners and players. The rest of us just get screwed on higher ticket prices. If the league had 8 Canadian teams and maybe 12 to 16 Northern US teams, it would be a much better league than it is today IMO. 1 Quote

While the WWF spectacle was exploding stateside, to have HNiC keep pace (measured by the gradually increasing height and starchiness of Monsieur Cherry's shirt collars and the absurdity of his loud, patterned suits) was in fact growing the sport everywhere that broadcast reached. Add in the Rock'em Sock'em VHS fight compilations, and you had a low-brow celebration of a vastly superior product to pro wrestling that was infinitely more dangerous and real. No other "real" sport was AS gladiatorial and circus-like as the NHL. In large part this era was defined by Cherry's on-screen commentary and his son's sensationalistic video curation.
