Guess we just need to dominate them harder next year

But now that Lindy's proven he can beat them with this roster, the media will have Cooper winning this next year for getting his underdog team to 2nd or 3rd place against all odds.

Cooper deserved it before.  To give it now because they screwed up before is what it is.  There's no one more deserving than Ruff this year.  He pulled then together and made them believe they could win.

Cooper just rode the coattails of an established and decent team.

Maybe it's like Josh Allen being slighted for MVP previously and he gets it in a year he likely should not.

Mike Schmidt once said you get voted to All Star games a year after you deserve i it and later on a year after you don’t.  This is the year after for Coop because he never got the one(s) he deserved.

I get strong vibes that gushing on Jon Cooper by media members is a virtue signal.

It's to say "I'm so knowledgeable about hockey because I can appreciate how knowledgeable Jon Cooper is." Somewhere along the lines it became a thing and it stuck.

This is the same guy who rode McDavid, MacKinnon, and Celebrini into the ground to at the Olympics, even though he had many other perfectly good and rested options on the bench.

I don't get it.

Bolts fans will tell you how Coop navigated an injury depleted roster to success and I don’t agree with the narrative, but it exists in hockey twitter.  The more likely take is that it’s a “lifetime achievement award,” which doesn’t make anyone feel better.   I’ve already stated it makes no sense but that’s what happened.

Media voted on this, right?

My take is, this is how the Sabres system is perceived around the league.  “River hockey”.  I’m guessing that the view elsewhere is our system is a gimmick, and not a “real” system.

As opposed to a system of “beat the ***** out of them and hope they get intimidated”. Actually, yeah, that’s what the hockey media loves.

Cooper's team fell apart down the stretch and resorted to repeated and honorless goonery as they were getting overtaken. This is a lifetime achievement award at the expense of that guy in little old Buffalo. Will need those young Sabres to do it again and/or better next season to prove that Ruff deserves the award. Or some such legacy hockey/national sports media nonsense.

Buffalo (and in this case, Lindy Ruff) is the perfect sacrificial lamb, because our little market will continue to consume hockey no matter how obviously the league leans on the other side of the scale. We're the perfect team (in both sports) to have in the playoffs, but there's no "need" for us to ever achieve the generational dream. The big picture storyline might be better the longer we don't. Lovable losers. Resilient runners-up.

Bettman would not let Lindy win the award just like he never would have allowed us to beat Montteal, He has a long memory and still resents the "snub" from the draft where both Lindy and (ex GM Darcy) Regier walked up but refused to shake Bettman' hand. I bet Bettman is getting a good laugh out of screwing us against Montreal then screwing Lindy...

Except Lindy Ruff already won a jack Adams in 2006 and Bettman doesn't have input on the award.

Your odd conspiracy theory falls apart pretty quick.

Disappointing results.  Cooper gets it on past performances?   Is that a thing?

Appears so. I saw a couple hockey accounts on social media (not Sabres accounts - just hockey generally) refer to this as Cooper's lifetime achievement award.

This sort of thing happens with the Oscars, I think? I can't recall offhand but I seem to remember instances where one actor's performance seems like the clear winner but then another established actor would win because they'd somehow never won one before (and perhaps were wrongly snubbed in years past (which creates a bit of a cycle doesn't it?)).

Right, it was done by the people whose actual job is to fix things.

I’m disappointed that so many people didn’t see this coming. The NHL gets every single thing wrong.

These awards are almost always a season behind or based on some other criteria than what it’s supposed to actually be.

Leo, the revenant

This is simply par for the course - almost all media based awards work this way

I had DiCaprio in mind but could not put the pieces together.

Some sort of Mandela Effect always makes me think that he won best male actor in a lead role for Wolf of Wall Street -- which he did not.

But was there someone obviously worthy who got snubbed because DiCaprio won that year?

Have we, or will we ever, here the rationale from the voters for Cooper’s worthiness this year?

You already did. On every intermission on ESPN and TNT all season long.
