GDT: 2026 1st Round Game 6 -- Sabres @ Bruins 5/1/2026, 7:30 pm ET, MSG-B, ESPN, NESN

I need them to do what they did in game 4 and try to setup more cross-crease shots. They were catching Swayman and the Boston D out of position easily.

Get low in the zone and do that work again from the low circles and run away with it.

There are no hockey Gods, this was proven in 99. If there was ever a team who you think the NHL would benefit from a team advancing another round, it's Buffalo. There has been a ton of hype about the crowds, the city, the 14 year drought, all of it.

We are going to find out tonight if Buffalo has stepped out of the shadows when we see how the penalties get called this evening. I don't feel great after the muggings that took place in OT last game. We are going to rip into this team tonight, and as long as Lyon shows up, no need for my tickets on Sunday.

I packed every ounce of blue, gold, Goathead I could get my hands on and may combine both for karma - GET IT FCKN DONE!

Or, the NHL knows they have have their best TV ratings in Buffalo.  No NBA and no MLB to compete with.   A true hockey town in the USA.  WNY TVs will be tuned in more than Boston will once their team is out.

The Sabres have gone from being an invisible and irrelevant franchise to being the most compelling franchise in the league this year with its dramatic turnaround. And as you point out, whether Buffalo moves on or not, it is a hot hockey market from a viewership standpoint. The shame of the situation is that for a long time this market was steadily diminished by the people who managed the franchise. Happily, for the league and the fans, the dormant franchise has been revived.

Usually one team in the first round blows a 3-1 or 3-2 series lead.  Better not be us this season.  If it happens it's because Swayman simply outduels Lyon.  I'm breaking out the emotional hedge bet tonight.  Putting money on the Bruins.  If Buffalo wins I'm thrilled to advance and "pay" for a win.  If Boston wins, my account will be swollen with funds.  Either way the night ends with something.

Don't forget,  Dallas was like 5 mins away from winning game 4 in regulation at Minnesota.  Then they were just one OT goal away from going up 3-1 in the series.  These OT goals win series.

I think tonight may come down to OT again for us.

I’d put the blame on the PP more than goaltending.  UPL was good in game 1 and not so good in game 2.  IMO Lyon has been just as good as Swayman.  We’ve been pretty accurate at hitting him in that big B on his chest!

Yes, but ...

If McLeod takes the shot in the 3rd when he had a clear lane to the net and IIRC Krebs there for any possible rebound, we might not be stressing at all about tonight.  When they DON'T have the puck where it needs to be for the straight on shot, yes, work on getting them to go across the zone and particularly work on getting Swayman going across the crease.

The biggest key seems to be both getting that cross ice pass available plus chaos in front of the net because that seems to be what's caused Swayman to lose sight of the puck for just that extra instant that's necessary to get it by him.

Trying to relax and not stress. I haven’t enjoyed watching much due to caring too much. Hope we get it done tonight. I fear the worst.

If we don’t TCB tonight, not sure I can watch game 7. I’ll have to record it if so, and hope to watch it afterwards should they win it. If not, I won’t. Hoping it doesn’t come to that.

But again, really hoping they can get it over with tonight.

I don't much care for the Goo Goos so I can't really comment.

I don't know that Game 4 can be a guide. In game 4, the Bruins loosened up the defensive system in an attempt to generate some offense. Strum talked about doing this the day before the game. It was a HUGE mistake, and by the time they realized this, it was 3-0. In the last game, they went the other way and packed the neutral zone even more than they did in games 1-3, and the Sabres had no room to skate. Pang said the Bruins were, in effect, playing a 1-4 (instead of their usual 1-2-2) defensive trap last game. There were long periods in the third where the Bruins had almost zero forecheck, dropping back into their defensive shape as soon as the Sabres won the puck. The Sabres would come to a complete stop in their own zone to regroup in order to attack the trap. It didn't work, and the game ground to a halt. To extend the metaphor, the Bruins "dammed the river." And it worked REALLY well. Even the overtime goal was them having everyone packed in except Pasternak. I didn't necessarily feel all of this at the time because I was so wrapped up in the moment, but in retrospect, this is what was going on. They play like an outmatched soccer team, parking the bus and hoping to score on the counter. Marco Strum, being German, knows exactly what he's doing. We'll see more of the same tonight, and the Sabres are going to have to dump and chase, which they are loath to do.

Yes we all have that fear lingering.

Would it be terrible if I just watched the 3rd period? I’m not sure I can handle this. Especially not to that team or that place and that city after this drought

Not terrible, just unusual because the anxiety level will be a lot higher in the 3rd period than the first two periods, especially if it's a close game. OTOH, if this game goes into OT, and if you think the anxiety level is way too much to handle, you might wanna consider recording OT, then check the NHL scores every other minute on your phone or laptop, and if you see the Sabres have won, then it's safe to go back and watch the OT in its entirety. Just don't tell your closest friends or family members you did that, or they'll shame you for at least 3 days. I hate to admit it, but I know this from a past experience I had.

I’m going to be wearing #39 tonight for a few periods before I have depart for the theatre. Wore it for games 3 and 4. Please score early and don’t make me anxious and dread checking scores at intermission.

My advice to Sabres forwards in close -

If it’s that good luck you need to be rocking it at the theatre too haha.  I wore my jersey to the Road Less Travelled theatre last week and got a bunch of Go Sabres

Am ridiculously calm right now.  Have no idea if that's a good sign or not.

Know bouncing off the walls overly pumped up for a game tends to be a VERY bad sign.  Not sure with this.  Expecting it's good.

Go 'bres!  😉
