I'm really trying to not be critical of how fans enjoy themselves but is everyone good with the fans chanting the goalie's name, particularly when he's either pitching a shut out or clearly is the best player on the ice?  I suppose it can be written off as fans trying to get into the goalie's head but it seems a little foolish to chide a player who is clearly controlling the series.

This has been driving me absolute mad. It makes no sense and makes the fans doing to look really dumb. I get it’s fun. I get it’s easy. That doesn’t mean it’s worthwhile.

I also don't like it or think its a good idea when a player is playing as confidently and good as he has been.

I think he could be using it and motivating his play.

“I think Buffalo fans might just be a little slow. Usually when I’m playing well at home there’s a little more pace in the cadence of fans cheering my name, but it’s probably all the mercury and chemicals in the water here causing fans to drag it out a bit more.”—Jeremy Swayman, probably.

The series is 1 – 1 and he collapsed at the end of the third period in game 1. Every time he’s let in a goal he’s immediately let in more. So I’m not following your narrative.

There’s no issue with lighting him up with jeers once he lets one in. The issue is when he’s 50/60 minutes each game without letting one in and jeering him.

What he's saying is that when a goalie is going well that chant doesn't get him off his game but rather helps dial him in.

AFTER he's given up a goal is when the chant helps.  While that goal is still fresh in his mind, it can help keep him off kilter.

And am part of the contingent that cringed both games when it started up almost from puck drop.

The drought has definitely effected the way the Buffalo fans cheer and how they react.  Fourteen years and lets not forget that it is more like 18 since this team was in the upper echelon of the NHL.

It was pointed out on national broadcasts/podcasts/social media that from the looks of the crowd many of them have never seen a playoff team in Buffalo.

They are going to cheer the way they want.  Seems to be more of a Bills Mafia feel outside with the rollerbladers beating on dummies and all that stuff.

I am just happy the Sabres have rabid fans again.  There will be new chants and new craziness.

As for the Swayman chant, I doubt is bothers him no matter what the timing is on the chant.

The chants started, in both games when the score was 0-0.

You can disagree, but the "narrative" appears obvious.

My narrative, SDS’s narrative or the fans narrative?

Its something thats been done for as long as I can remember

Back in 90s when we'd play Toronto, I distinctly remember our fans chanting at Curtis Joseph

Narrative is a term for this divisive new millennium.   What was once an opinion is now called a narrative.

Your opinion was clear... you don't taunt the goalie while he's goalie-ing you.

That might be your truth, but who knows if it’s Inkys truth

But he wasn’t. He was stopping shots he could easily see with no traffic. He was not standing on his head. The minute we put actual pressure on him he let in goals. This was clearly explained in game one and continued through game two.

An entire arena was either filled with people who thought it was a good idea and started the chant or thought the idea was good enough and joined in. Who am I to question them?

I wouldn't do it, but then that's not my style any way.

Completely ridiculous to henpeck the people who spent $100s to $1000s of dollars per seat. An entire arena coming together to cheer on their team after 16 years and here we have a bunch of whiny ***** complaining they’re not cheering correctly.

Nobody here knows if it’s bothered Swayman or not. So why don’t you all do you and leave everybody else alone.

Booing the power play, yelling when the Dman lets the line change complete, giving it to UPL... that's not cheering.

Focus. There’s a very specific complaint being addressed here and it is complaining about fans positively trying to affect the game but the wrong way according to that. And it’s not just a scattering of people, it’s an entire arena that is so loud it is almost as loud as the television broadcasters.
