Mustache of God Posted April 13 Report Posted April 13 That's a good sign for a deep playoff run. While the Sabres don't have any of the high-end 100 point players, but they've got the most scoring depth in the league. That's going to be huge come playoff time when the teams are focused on shutting down Thompson. Go ahead and shadow him, we've got 2 other lines to run you over with. 2 3 Quote
dudacek Posted April 13 Report Posted April 13 Also Östlund with 27 in 60 and Norris with 32 in 42. Like I said in another thread, the depth is real and significant. 7 Quote
msw2112 Posted April 13 Report Posted April 13 This reminds me of the banana slug Lindy teams that rolled 4 solid lines that could all skate and produce offense and were almost impossible to stop because of it. As we all know (at least the elders of us), the 20025-06 team from that era probably would have won the Stanley Cup if not for the devastating rash of injuries on defense during the playoffs. The current team, with Metsa, Stanley, Kesselring, Timmins, and Schenn (and even Ryan Johnson and Zac Jones in Rochester but with NHL experience) all available for the third defensive pairing, should not have that issue. 1 Quote

Certainly would help in the case of injuries. Edmonton and Florida have been the 2 best teams in the playoffs last year, and they are/were both top heavy. Edmonton only had 5 guys with over 40 points, Florida had only 6. I could see this going both ways. 1 Quote
That Aud Smell Posted April 13 Report Posted April 13 Anyone remember that WGR550 caller in 2006 or 2007 who made a legitimately good send-up of Johnny Cash's "I Walk the Line," but instead it was Lindy Ruff giving his perspective through "I Roll Four Lines"? So good. It's a slightly different team, of course, but, even so, we are back to the future. Quote
GASabresIUFAN Posted April 13 Report Posted April 13 (edited) If this team can get to 11 players with 40+ they’d match the 05/06 team with 11. 05/06 had 6 guys with 20 plus goals and 11 with 10+. This team has 5 guys with 20+ Dahlin can make it 6 with one more goal. This team also has 13 players with 10+ Edited April 13 by GASabresIUFAN 1 Quote

That and was it Meyers who got the very first delay of game penalties for putting the puck out of play? But old folks will remember the pivotal moment: Buffalo Sabres defenseman Brian Campbell received a crucial delay of game penalty in Game 7 of the 2006 Eastern Conference Finals against the Carolina Hurricanes. Campbell flipped the puck over the glass in his own zone, leading to a power-play goal by Rod Brind'Amour that gave the Hurricanes a 3-2 lead Quote
dudacek Posted April 13 Report Posted April 13 (edited) People talk about belonging in certain roster slots: "he's a good 2nd-liner" and such. Speaking purely statistically, there are 32 1st-liners, 32 2nd-liners, etc. Here are where various Sabres rank, strictly based on even strength points production: CENTRE 1st Line (42-96 points): Thompson (10th) 2nd Line (32-42): McLeod (38) Krebs (47)* 3rd Line (26-32): nobody 4th Line (20-26): Norris (111) Östlund (124)* RIGHT WING 1st Line (36-90): Tuch (12) Quinn (25) 2nd Line (22-26) Doan (41) 3rd Line (8-22) nobody 4th Line (1-8) nobody LEFT WING 1st Line (34-68): nobody 2nd Line (21-34): Benson (33) Zucker (43) 3rd Line (11-21): Malenstyn (88) 4th Line (3-11) Greenway (114) DEFENCE 1st Pair (24-58 points): Dahlin (4), Samuelsson (16), Byram (23) 2nd Pair (15-24): Stanley (66) Power (72) 3rd Pair (8-15): Timmins (186) * NHL.com lists a number of players at centre who have predominantly played the wing. For the Sabres, that includes Krebs and Östlund. Krebs 38 ES points would rank him as a 1st-liner, 24 among NHL LWs, Östlund's 21 would rank him 65, or a very good 3rd liner. Krebs is a reminder of how public perception of what a top 6 player is fails to match reality, at least when people are talking about ES production. His peers include centres Dylan Strome, Matty Beniers, Brayden Point, Vincent Trochek and Joel Erickson Ek, and wingers Brady Tkachuk, Zach Hyman, Tyler Bertuzzi, Bryan Rust and Patrick Kane. They also include Jack Quinn, who is a frequent candidate for benching around here, despite being the NHL's 25th highest scoring ES RW. Also, the Sabres have 8 top 6 forwards in terms of ES production. A healthy Norris probably makes that 9. Edited April 13 by dudacek 3 Quote
