On the topic of chants, when is it appropriate to start “1,2…we want more!?” I’ve heard it after three goals at several games this year and hated it every time. I think you want to have at least four, if not five.

Could be its own thread. Thank you, Sabres, too. But we don't really want to hear that, unlesssssss...

Yes and only when you're pulling away. Even in the TB game, We Want 8 in a 7-7 game just ain't right. No ties-ies.

I heard a We Want 15 at the Aud. Surreal.

Today I learned, as suspected 20 years ago when this chant was having a similar moment during a Sabres resurgence, that the idea for it emanated from the Montreal Forum.

The story was that Sabres fans adopted it during the team's first appearance in the playoffs, in 1973, when Buffalo and Montreal met.

This story confirms that the chant was around even before the Sabres franchise.

I love that the leatherlung who popularized it in Montreal was later asked to, basically, STFU and went on to divorce the Habs and put a curse on them.

Anywho...

Here's a video, unknown year, of early Sabres fans doing the chant.

And again in May 2006.

It sure seems like the chant is ready to have another moment after it was sung lustily toward the end of the BJ game. And several times before that per @Taro T.

My recollection as a kid is that Montreal did it first, and we stole it.

I was in the Aud chanting it against the Habs in 73, and I was chanting it while exiting Key Bank after we beat the Kracken a few weeks ago.

Not how it originated

The Bisons Booster Club, which became the Sabre’s Booster club, started with an emphatic “We want 1”.

Then 1, we want 2.  And so on.

I'm not feeling this chant. Heard a few people trying to get it going walking out of the rink and cringed. Can we not stick with the classic LET'S GO BUFFALO!!!!?

Also cringed at people singing the Bills shout song.

Firstly, after watching last year's playoffs I'm so sick of the NFL as a league and football now really bugs me.

Second, I want to see the Sabres have their moment without anymore references to the Bills (please no Josh Allen drum beating in the playoffs as I saw suggested on Twitter).

Third and this might be the biggest, for all the years people have been singing the "Shout" song, no one has even created a proper ending without the music. With the music you've got the line that goes "🎶WHEM, 🎶WHEM, 🎶WHEM, 🎶WHEM... THE BILLS MAKE ME WANT TO SHOUT!". Nice and concise.

Without the "🎶WHEM, 🎶WHEM, 🎶WHEM, 🎶WHEM" it just ends too awkwardly. I'm surprised Bills fans haven't figured this out. This really irks me, because the ay-ay-ay-ay part is so good.

Prior to this season the only time I’d ever hear a shout chant at a Sabres game would be in Raleigh in the concourse. I don’t think any true to god Sabres fan would ever start a shout chant at a Sabres game.

& 1980 & ~1993.

Don't know of any other versions.

As long as you're ahead it works at any score.  Personally not a fan of it when trailing & if the score is tied, it's just bad juju.

I thought everyone knew it was a Habs thing first.

It's the reason I don't like it.  They have their stuff and we have ours.  "We're gonna win that Cup" and "Let's go Buff-a-lo" among them.

I don't want a buffalo Zamboni, either; the Utah team has that and that's fine.  Just like I don't want anyone copying the beer sabre.

I like the "I Believe That We will Win" chant that's popular with some colleges like Utah State and also with the American Outlaws (Team USA soccer) because of how contagious it is once it gets started.

Honestly didn't know Ooh Aah was a Habs thing.

But also didn't know Naa-naa-hey-hey was a White Sox thing before the Battle of Quebec '83.  Both fan bases were singing it and never watched the White Sox.

Thank you for being honest. Some in this thread are pretending they didn't claim 20 years ago it was unique to Buffalo.

I always thought Ooh Ahh was unique to Buffalo. Ive never been aware of it being associated with any other team.  I guess I learned something new whether I wanted to or not.

I definitely had no idea where or when it originated.  I didn’t immediately cling to it. And I couldn’t figure out why.  Maybe subconsciously I knew it was borrowed.

The NFL has genuinely fallen off a cliff. It’s awful now. Sports entertainment is now far more entertainment than sport. It feels fake.

I didn't know until reading about it on here. I think this was the thread (about to be 20 years old):
