GASabresIUFAN Posted March 14 Report Posted March 14 This has become a very fast team. McLeod, Tuch, Thompson (yes Thompson), Zucker, Kozak, Krebs, Byram, Norris, Quinn and Kesselring can all motor. In the top 10 this year in speed bursts are Malenstyn 5 times, Kozak, Krebs, Quinn, Norris and Byram. https://www.nhl.com/nhl-edge/teams/buffalo-sabres-7/20252026/2/skating-speed 2 Quote

I think it was 2 or 3 years ago he had the 2nd or 3rd fastest skating speed in the NHL, and I think he was in the top 10 in terms of speed bursts also (or close to those numbers, whatever they were they pointed to him being one of the fastest in the league). Now I did notice this year his numbers have dropped, Quote

dperr Posted March 14 Report Posted March 14 Malenstyn is my favorite player on the team. Nobody plays harder. I think that in a pinch he could play on one of the scoring lines and do quite well. Besides his speed, he also has some nifty moves with the puck. 2 Quote

There are some nuances to these skating speed figures. The first is I am not sure how far you have to go before it is recorded as a speed burst. I think you have to cross a zone at least. Another is these I dont't think these bursts are from a standing start but I don't know that for certain. If you are starting a burst from a skating start it will be an advantage to attain a high level of speed. In Dahlin's case, he has put on weight over the past few years intentionally giving up some speed for strength. At any rate his speed is not a problem. https://www.nhl.com/nhl-edge/skaters/rasmus-dahlin-8480839/20252026/2/skating-speed Quote

Now I did notice this year his numbers have dropped, McCloud did have some of the best speed bursts a few years ago but skating super fast once or twice is less important than skating fast consistently. McCloud is in the 99th percentile between 20-22mph and 18-20mph. These numbers are not normalized for time on Ice they should be but there is little doubt he is still an excellent skater and importantly can skate fast while carrying the puck which is harder to do than skating in fast for a forcheck or backcheck. https://www.nhl.com/nhl-edge/skaters/ryan-mcleod-8480802/20252026/2/skating-speed 1 Quote

The speed burst figures of the nhl seem to favor bigger long striding players that get recorded going through zones. He certainly takes awhile to get moving and that is the aspect that makes him slow. https://www.nhl.com/nhl-edge/skaters/logan-stanley-8479378/20252026/2/skating-speed Quote

For reference Beck's overall skating speed stats. They would be top of NHL given more Ice time. https://www.nhl.com/nhl-edge/skaters/beck-malenstyn-8479359/20252026/2/skating-speed 1 Quote

DarthEbriate Posted March 15 Report Posted March 15 You've never heard of the Malenstyn Falcon? He's the winger that made the Kessel Run... wait, what? 2 1 Quote

HumanSlinky39 Posted March 16 Report Posted March 16 Interesting. I've never viewed him as overly fast. I've always seen him more for his physicality. Quote

Very little of Dahlin’s skating prowess has to do with speed. It’s his agility and change of direction are what make him who he is. 2 Quote

He just wasn't mentioned as one of the Sabres "fast" skaters, but IMO, and as you alluded, he's fast on the ice because of his elite skating skills. Quote
JP51 Posted March 17 Report Posted March 17 I honestly had no idea he was this fast... I mean thats some serious speed to be clocked at... Quote
