They are now expecting the cap to approach $125M by the 28/29 season.

First, some of you all owe me an apology.

Second, this is why players are crazy to sign long term contracts unless they get above market.

Third, the Sabres just have to navigate next year and once the Skinner buyout drops to $2.4M, there’s no one that can’t afford.

They are going to be in terrific shape with all the core players on long-term contracts.

Could Tuch commit to a one-year hometown discount, then get his $10+ for 6 years afterward?

He could, but honestly it's a really stupid move from a player prospective since NHL contracts are guaranteed.

What happens if he takes a 1-year discount with intent of re-upping at the max contract the next year, but suffers a freak accident and he's not able to play after that? He's essentially gambling 10s of millions of dollars on that scenario. I won't blame him for getting his bag elsewhere.

For sure. He is the top UFA winger -- and is going to have a playoff run to bolster his value.

(But maybe he really wants to be here.)

IF he's under contract (on a 1 year deal), come January he could get a 7 year deal.  He just can't get one as a UFA which he'll be on July 1.

But don't see a reason for him to do so.

Yeah and with Helenius waiting in the wings, it'll be tough to justify.  I want him on the team but unless something drastic happens this offseason, I don't see it happening.

It still doesn't make a lot of sense to me but I guess everyone (minus the fans) is making money in this economy. Can't wait for $30 beers.

I trade power in the offseason and keep Tuch plus plan to sign whatever blue chip Power can return while navigating the gap needed for salary

Depends on how Logan Stanley works out but definitely a good thought...

How I'd put it is how much does he want to stay here? If he really wants to stay here then why wouldn't he have reason

I really don't think Tuch is sticking around....we signed our Tuch replacement already....his name is Josh Doan.

Josh Doan is not Tuch’s replacement. Assuming Alex doesn’t sign, they will find another top scoring forward to replace him

Pretty sure Thomas would've essentially have been Tuch's replacement next season.  Kind of like Parayko likely would've been Byram's replacement next year as Byram ended up getting moved to bring in the Norris injury insurance policy that stacks the F's when Norris is healthy and still leaves a strong top 6 when he isn't.

But, at least for now those ships have sailed.  Will be interesting to see if either potential deal gets relooked at in the off-season but would've really been nice to have both of those as extra pieces for this season's run.

He can currently sign an 8 year deal (if his agent and Kekalainen can agree on an amount and a structure for that contract).  If he does so, he has injury protection and a degree of certainty.

Should he sign a 1 year deal with a verbal commitment (and it can't be anything more than that if he signs a 1 year deal; and either side could walk away from a verbal commitment) to sign a 7 year deal in a year; what happens if he gets injured, or trails off much sooner than expected?  There is nothing other than a gentlemans' agreement keeping the Sabres on course to honor the deal.  Or if he has an even better year next year than he does this year, there isn't anything holding Tuch to that deal.

If they agree on what he should get over the course of the next 8 years; just work it out before this July 1 and be done with it.  Dumping Greenway via trade with no retention essentially offsets the Skinner extra $4MM cap hit next year.  They can fit Alex in next year if both sides really want him back at a price that's fair to both.  Just don't see a situation where it makes sense to jump through extra hoops if they (meaning both sides) have a number already in mind that is mutually agreeable.  And even with the cap going up significantly in the near future, can't see Tuch at this point of his career being worth what he wants nor even what Kempe got.  (My 2 cents, YMMV.)

I think people should prepare that Tuch won’t be here after this season. If Tuch was actually gonna take less to stay here I’d think this deal would have been done weeks or even months ago. Tuch wants what he wants. Sabres don’t want to pay him that much. This ride ends at the end of the season most likely.

Probably right, but maybe Tuch is still taking a wait & see approach.  If he sees Jarmo taking action to address gaps, resulting in the team going deep into the playoffs, then maybe this will convince him to take less.  That said, I agree he’s probably gone and I still maintain that the Sabres view Doan as his replacement.

If the trade deadline isn’t sufficient evidence that Jarmo is committed to filling gaps, I don’t know that any more evidence would change things.
