I’ve seen a few. I don’t think they’re as bad as the screaming consensus, but I certainly don’t think they’re good. And I also think the “Nickel City” moniker is nonsense that has nothing to do with the city of Buffalo in any way.

Nickel City became a Buffalo nickname when the Indian Head nickel coin was minted and it was a very popular reference in the 70s as well, so I can’t say it has nothing to do with the city.

I'm aware, but that has genuinely nothing to do with the city, though. There are a billion different things out there with an American bison on them. Should Buffalo be known as T-Shirt City because there's a Bison on a t-shirt? The coin wasn't minted in Buffalo, there is no nickel available in the region. It's just a big pile of meh to me.

Huh?

I mean, Nickel City is indisputably one of Buffalo’s nicknames.

Queen City as well, of course.

I was seeing this nickel city thing on twitter and was wondering what it was all about. This makes sense now. The buffalo on the nickel. Didn't realize that gave the city a nickname though. I certainly never ever heard it back in the day when I was in the area. The only nickel city is actually Sudbury.

I’m aware, and I just explained that I think it’s a lazy nickname. An American bison appearing on a nickel has nothing to do with the city of Buffalo. It wasn’t done to honor or observe the city. No part of that initiative was related to the city itself.

Your beef is with the nickname then?

Because it’s definitely an established, ingrained nickname for Buffalo (N.Y.).

Yes, that’s what I’ve said from the beginning. I’m well aware that it’s established. I think it’s a weak nickname that gives no identifiable credit or reputation to the city. Neither does Queen City.

Oh my god. Please stop explaining decades-old nicknames. Everybody knows why they exist. Not everybody needs to like them.

There are more than a dozen queen cities in the country (technically, more than 50, but alas). Nothing about Buffalo screams “queen,” other than maybe being the notably smaller city in the state.

”The City of Light” / “Lit City” is the best nickname I’ve seen for the city, but it’s rarely used. The city leaned into it a few years ago, but it’s never really crossed beyond Western New York as an identifier.

Someone not liking milquetoast nicknames really is serious business to you, huh?

I'm glad you are fighting the good fight with this. Stupid things need to be called out.

They wear them for one game, right? If so, this is A LOT of hand wringing and pearl clutching for one game. Don't like it? Don't buy it.

One game, ten games, whatever. Hardly anyone under 80 years old understands or identifies with these nicknames. Find something more relevant.

I was referring to the kit, not the nickname.

Right, “oh ffs” wasn’t an expression of frustration or anything. 🤪

If you are trying to avoid it and don’t care, why engage with discontent and condescension? There’s enough of that out there from people who are actually intending to bring down others. There was no “hot take.” Simply an opinion you strongly disagree with.

so, fair play to you.

i do tend to take avoiding”th[at] sort of thing” at least somewhat seriously.

i’ll occasionally engage with “that sort of thing” so as to discourage and thereby diminish its presence.

it’s a losing battle, i will admit.

also lame as hell but still preferable. at least there's some metaphysical aspect to it.

also, i'm not much of a jersey guy but will say: the nickel city unis don't do anything for me. they're ... also lame?

Should I be worried about the Bills defense? It hasn't really been great in years (postseason) and feel like Beane is a mediocre drafter.

this is a good question.

my sense is that they're going to be more of a boom-bust operation?

what was mcdermott's MO? give up on stopping the run in any meaningful way. prevent big plays. tighten up inside your own ... 30?

he was good enough to have good teams, playoff teams. but, man, his approach never paid off in the playoffs.
