I think I was right: at least the results have borne that out so far And this : Meh. Join the club. I post a lot of things no one believes or buys into at the time. They also have 6 forwards, 5 D and 1 goalie 6’3” and over according to the Sabres website, except Power plays like he is 5’9” 170. PerreaultForever Posted January 23 Report Posted January 23 I have this fear that the moment I start to "believe" they will start to suck again just like the last time I started to "believe" and so I'm going to stay skeptical for the good of the team. 2 2 2 2 Quote

This is the team put together by "the worst GM ever." Pretty much every move he made was derided at the time but looks like a winner now. North Buffalo Posted January 23 Report Posted January 23 (edited) Sabres have tons of Talent even without Norris... but can they keep up this run and avoid falling back into a game of shinny... they have some guys that seem to fall back cough cough Thompson, Power... but of late they have been more physical... again show me. Pretty much every move he made was derided at the time and that was proven out as the accurate reading - you make it sound like this was some grand master plan. The “blinding light brigade” was Cozens, Peterka, Quinn..we were saving for the Quinterka extensions so “couldn’t address the roster in the now”. Adams failed multiple times over before we were eventually bad for so long the law of averages and accumulation of high picks took over you disregard time like it’s a non existent variable when it’s the most important one. It is not normal to field a 78 point bottom of the barrel team for 5 years before fielding a potential playoff team - that can only ignite once said GM is fired because they are a symbol for lack of accountability. Adams made some good moves: i should hope so, he was here for over half a decade. But ultimately you are what your record says your are: Adams’ record was bad, and for far too long. 2 2 Quote

Sabres resembled their GM... too affable... tons of talent no moxie... Gen z tune out til they were called out on their bs by new GM... and some players finally showed some signs of growing up. 1 Quote

I don't disagree with this, but we do know that it was always looking like a long rebuild process and patience was going to be required. The concept was floated that the team was being built for long-term success and not giving up on developing assets for a one-time run at a playoff spot. It will be a number of years before we know if it will turn out that way. Signing guys early like Thompson, Samuelsson and now Doan are looking good towards that goal, but Cozens not so much, and Power TBD. It was time for a leadership change and I'm glad there was one, but that doesn't mean that many of Adams' moves didn't turn out well. I always think of the O'Reilly trade (which was before Adams took over) as an example of requiring patience. At the time, it looked like a horrible trade for the Sabres. O'Reilly went on to lead St. Louis to the Stanley Cup and the Sabres got two veteran players who didn't want to play for the team and a tall goofy kid who couldn't get out of his own way. The trade was labeled one of the worst in franchise history. Now, who would you (and every GM in the league) want on their roster? O'Reilly or Tage Thompson? O'Reilly is still in the league and capable of good hockey (he played well against the Sabres in the Nashville loss a few days ago), but Tage is one of the top scorers in the league and is still young, with a long career ahead of him. He's a star. And after a couple of years of being a great goal scorer and not much else, he's even learned to play with an edge, greater intensity, and even comes back to help on defense. He's maturing as a hockey player right around the time the Sabres are maturing as a team. I raise this as a cautionary tale of present vs. futures in assessing hockey transactions. It's also too soon to anoint the current Sabres squad. They're in a tear right now and it looks sustainable, but time will tell. I THINK that it's for real this time, but, let's see where we are in April. Edited January 23 by msw2112 1 Quote

Bottom pair isn’t impact imo 100% it has an impact. When your top four are playing huge minutes night after night, it wears on them. They also know they have to conserve energy, which limits how active and aggressive they can be. As per your Colorado example: Makar ~25 minutes, Toews ~22. Manson and Burna are in the 18–20 range. Girard and Malinski play 16–18. The two guys you mentioned as the “bottom pair” have each played just seven games, mostly as the 7th/8th defenseman. Since Timmons got hurt, the Sabres’ top four are all averaging over 22 minutes a night — often playing nearly the entire third period. That absolutely matters. 1 2 Quote

mjd1001 Posted January 24 Report Posted January 24 (edited) I felt they were better than their point totals earlier in the season, and they are probably not as good as they are playing now. I thought before the season that this was an 85-95 point team. Maybe I can be convinced this is a 90-100 point team now based on how they are playing recently? I beleive they are a playoff contender, but they are still close to 50-50 on making it to the playoffs. Its the goaltending. They have been getting 'just good enough' goaltending to have them keep winning close games. 13 of their 17 wins over the past few weeks have been by 1 goal or 2 goals (many of the 2 goal wins were 1 goal leads until they got the empty netter). With last year's UPL, this team would probably have half the wins over the last few weeks than they do. But this isn't last years UPL, its the 'better' version this year. Game to game, they have a very thin margin of error. Edited January 24 by mjd1001 Quote
