Now it all depends on what we do with the bit of space we finally have. I hope to hear that locker room being discontent with their current place in the standings. It can't be good enough. Nacho Libre Posted January 23 Report Posted January 23 (edited) I hesitate to even post this as I didn’t expect a change THIS extreme but the fact of the matter remains I did point out that a change at GM could have huge ramifications just on its face. I think it’s worth pointing out because it was argued against me for a long time that it was pointless without other moves. I think I was right: at least the results have borne that out so far On 10/12/2025 at 5:56 PM, Thorny said: the most salient element however is that Adams deserves to be fired..so he should be fired. Even leaving aside the fact it could be reflective of a change of mindset for Terry, or that he could get lucky with a new hire, or that there literally can’t be someone worse - it at the very least shows some element of accountability. That this element is somehow underplayed well escapes me: THE BIGGEST issue with the sabres is lack of expectation and accountability. That’s what put them in this mess. People keep taking about culture - without a level of accountability that doesn’t exist. Adams is demonstrably bad so he deserves to be fired. “But will the new hire even be better? Terry sucks!” is an elementary level diversion. Of course Terry is the big bad. It does not change the fact that Adams deserves to be fired we learn at like age 5 that “two wrongs don’t make a right.” Avoiding firing Adams cause it “might not make a difference” is bottom of the barrel thinking. He doesn’t deserve to be GM. And this : Edited January 23 by Thorny 1 Quote

The rub is they won’t maintain even their *current* level, if they don’t. Can’t rest on laurels 1 Quote

It appears that more points will be needed than in the past. So, while I believe they are playing better, and playing like a team, and learning how to win, I will just enjoy the ride. Another thing. After the Olympics every team will be rested. Some teams will be healthier than they have been all year. So how teams play after the break will be a huge factor. I am thinking that Florida will make a run and really compress the Eastern Conference WC situation. 1 hour ago, Thorny said: Detroit too far up to fall out I’d imagine There have been some signs since the streak that there’s some regression on the way for buffalo, even intuitively speaking no I don’t believe the sabres to be legitimately the 8th best team in the NHL: I think we are being buoyed by some really strong momentum, here. But that’s momentum on top of a team that, increasingly so, appears to actually be quite good. They don’t need to be a 13 wins in 15 games team to make the playoffs - to your point since the heart of the streak they’ve maintained a strong level of results. That‘s reflective of a good team regardless of it’s greatness Based on Toronto's winning percentage as the 9th-place team, the magic number right now is 94 points, which is more or less typical. I said weeks ago, 96 points should do it and I haven't really come off that. The Sabres needed 70 points in the final 53 games to hit that benchmark. They now need 35 in 32. Some sort of drop-off is absolutely inevitable, but it is amazing the cushion this run is creating. 2 1 Quote

Well, if somehow they keep this 0.800-ish pace going 10 more games, then sliding back to 0.600 for the last 22 games would have them at 101 though 80 games with a potential to end up at 105. That would be a 100% guaranteed lock on a playoff spot. Just keep running it while they can; and then don't let the future fall below 0.600 in any of those other four 5 game segments. Heck, provided it's bookended by 3 game win streaks on both ends, they can even have a 4 game losing streak in there and keep that pace. Amazing what a group can do when they all hold themselves personally accountable. Quote

Stads Posted January 23 Report Posted January 23 (edited) It just feels different than the previous years. That's pretty apparent. The players all look bought in. This is a small example from last night. You see Zucker go in on the forecheck. He motions to one of his linemates as to where to go Edited January 23 by Stads Quote

Someone that will rip your head off if you look at the crease. Those guys are invaluable in the post season. The forwards will be pretty nice once Norris and Kulich are healthy. Maybe use another banger but I like the makeup of the forwards right now. Quote

Bottom pair isn’t impact imo I agree with this. I mean, of course it would be nice if the 6-7-8 d-men could handle 15 minutes of ice-time a night if needed. But, elite teams often have elite d-men who relegate the 3rd pair to reduced ice-time. I wouldn't say it is the direct cause, but the absence of Timmins and Kesselring for much of the streak has left the Sabres having to give big ice-time to their top 4. It's worked out pretty well. Ya, in the playoffs (for the good teams) limiting the 3rd pair as much as possible seems to be a feature, not a bug Quote
