GAME: Buffalo Sabres (42-16-5) at Washington Capitals (22-34-7).

TIME: Tuesday, 7 p.m. EST.

Looking to move into a tie atop the Northeast Division, the Buffalo Sabres go for their season high-tying seventh straight win when they visit the struggling Washington Capitals.

The Sabres earned their third winning streak of at least six games with a 6-2 victory over Boston on Sunday. Thomas Vanek scored two goals and added an assist for Buffalo, which won seven in a row from Dec. 4-19.

"That's why we're a good team," said Buffalo center Daniel Briere, who saw his eight-game point streak come to an end. "We keep finding ways to win and there's no doubt it doesn't matter who scores. ... The depth of our team is what makes the difference and it showed tonight."

The Sabres' depth is particularly evident when it comes to offense. Buffalo's 220 goals are third-most in the Eastern Conference, with 10 players scoring at least 10 goals and three with at least 20.

Vanek, a 22-year-old rookie, is tied for the team lead with Ales Kotalik with 23 goals. Vanek has scored four times in the last four games, although he's been held without a point in four consecutive road contests. He has only eight goals in 30 road games this season.

The Sabres are in fourth place in the conference, nine points ahead of fifth-place Philadelphia, but continue to push the Ottawa Senators for first place in the Northeast. Buffalo is two points behind Ottawa, which hosts Tampa Bay on Tuesday.

Buffalo will be facing a Capitals team that it has dominated of late, winning six of the last seven meetings while outscoring Washington 34-14 during that span.

Love it, "this game in Sabres history".

Wild game...Caps scored 2 goals in the final minute of the first 8 seconds apart to take a 3-1 lead into the intermission, then scored with 5 seconds left in the 2nd to take a 4-3 lead into the intermission. Kotalik then scored with 1:43 left in the 3rd to give the Sabres their first lead and Afinigenov said I'll do you one better and scored with 1 second left in the game to ice a 6-4 Sabres win.

The Buffalo Sabres' road trip continues tonight when they take on the Washington Capitals tonight.

Catch the action on MSG and WGR 550 at 7 p.m. with pregame coverage on MSG kicking things off at 6:30.

Stay tuned for lineup news and other updates from the team's morning skate later today.

At 20-10-2, the Sabres are one of only nine teams this season with at least 20 road wins, marking the most road wins in a season for Buffalo since 2010-11 (22). The franchise record for most road wins in a season is 25, which they accomplished in 2005-06 and 2006-07.

A win today would also give Buffalo 34 wins on the season, two more than they earned in 82 games in 2021-22. The Sabres last earned 34 or more wins in a season in 2015-16 (35).

This is the third and final meeting between the Sabres and Capitals this season.

The Sabres are 2-0-0 against Washington this season, having defeated the Capitals 5-4 on the road in overtime on January 3 and 7-4 in Buffalo on February 26. Buffalo has earned at least one point in five of its last six matchups with Washington dating back to Buffalo's 5-2 win on April 15, 2021.

The Sabres are 4-4-2 in their last 10 games against the Capitals and 3-5-2 on the road.

This is the 177th game all-time between Buffalo and Washington. Buffalo has a 94-58-24 series record. The Sabres are 44-31-13 on the road against the Capitals all-time.

I had high hopes for Greenway-Jost-Mitts but didn't really like what I saw last game.

For that matter, I haven't liked Mitts' last few games -- he seems to have gotten too comfortable after the recent thread complimenting his improvement.  Sabrespace hype will do that to ya.
