2023 trade speculation and rumors

I think that McCabe could be the piece the Sabres are missing to get into the playoffs.  And his salary isn't exorbitant enough that they'd need Chicago to retain.  I'd do it for the 2nd and B-level guy.  I'd even give them Vegas's second, which, if the Sabres get McCabe, might be a better pick.  Or they can take choice.

McCabe is their best defenseman....  He'd be a huge upgrade over Bryson.

At a certain point, he may even have been the Sabres' best defenseman.  I've always loved his "special brand of mean," a phrase I used more than once here to describe his play.  Get him.

Idk if he hated it here or not but I agree that I'm not wanting to bring any of that energy back. If you were part of that group and are now gone I don't need you back.

He wasn't the problem.  He saw the problem and realized he couldn't fix it here and didn't mind leaving AT THE TIME.

Wishful thinking.  Perhaps true but to the previous point, we have moved on, and we are all better for it.  You don’t attempt to add an ingredient that previously made you sick.

He wasn't the ingredient that previously made the team sick, though.

Fair enough. It's just a line I don't want to cross. If I'm bringing in a vet to support the kids I want someone who knows what winning is like. McCabe did nothing but lose here and Chicago both. He's now in tank #2/3 of his career.

Jack Johnson is older, but will be cheaper, and has actual playoff experience.

He's 36!  McCabe comes through the next several years at only $4M.  If they're going to give up a 4th or 5th for Johnson, fine, but McCabe is the better player and the better move.  EDIT:  Please remember that it needn't be a one-off for this season.  The team lacks depth on D and we all know it.

I know he's 36 and he's a rental. It was just an example. McCabe is clearly the better player and we can differ in opinion about how to tinker with team chemistry.

That “certain point” was exactly the moment he laid out Laine

Jake and his wife were residents of Chicago as far back as 2016 and perhaps earlier. It is why they chose the Hawks in the first place. He’s not leaving.

And if he is, he’s not coming to a team like this. He would go to a team like the Avs or Rangers as an over the top acquisition.

—edit to add he has a modified NMC and I can almost guarantee Buffalo is on it.

Plus 3 on that team is an accomplishment. I get the weariness by some to bringing back a player from that era of dysfunction, but he was always a high effort player and never a douche nozzle like others on those teams so, if he is agreeable and KA thinks he can help on the back end, I’d be all for it.

Did you know, the Sabres have won as many games as the rangers this season so far?

Apparently Craig Button mentions Sabres could be a good spot for Karlsson on a TSN piece today. I can't get the video to play though....

Holy cow Craig…have you even looked at his contract status?
