OT: Weather (just weather)

Lots of rain last night.  There was a tornado less than ten miles from here; we supposedly saw 60-80 mph winds per weather reports.  Underpasses are flooding.  At least we didn't get the predicted baseball sized hail.

Looking like we have zero chance of being above freezing in Buffalo before mid February.

Already been 9 days and counting...in case anyone is wondering, the all-time record is 33 consecutive days without a temp above 32 degrees set back in 1978.

We approached this back in the brutal winter of 2015 that set the all-time lowest monthly average temperature record of 10.9 in February when we hit 32 consecutive days between January 29th to March 3rd.

Looking like 3rd week in February will be the earliest we could have a chance at getting above freezing which would put us in the upper 20s to low 30s in terms of consecutive days under freezing...could get interesting.

Tornado watch in effect until 11pm for all of WNY with a TorCon index of 3, with some selected areas a 5.

3 means a 30% chance of a tornado within 50 miles, 5 obviously means 50% chance.

Not very often we see that here.  It's pretty freaking dark out.

North Buffalo is loading animals two by two right now.

My North Buffalo basement had 6+ inches of water in it. Spent an hour sweeping it down the drains. Going to be a lot of work tomorrow. Deep freezer seems to be fried with 200+ lbs of meat in it. Hoping that I get a miracle and it works. If not I’ll be buying a new one tomorrow on top of everything else.

Whether you need the new freezer or not, get the best dehumidifier you can afford and plan on running it nonstop for the next 2 weeks.

Hopefully you didn't have any valuables near the floor in the basement.  The water will have wicked its way up a few more inches if it was in contact with anything porous.

Good luck w/ the clean up.  Not fun.

Was the water because a sump pump lost power or did you just get that much rain and the drainage around the house didn't keep the water away?

Just that much rain and our poor drainage. We’ve always had a wet basement, but never anything like that. Sounds like the whole neighborhood had their basement flooded anywhere from a few inches to a few feet. As always, it could have been worse.

Expecting your neighbors wouldn't appreciate it, but it the drainage is always bad, you might want to consider adding a French drain "upstream" of where your house sits.  They're very helpful.

Just North of you. Those were some pics of Kenmore Ave. and Hertel Ave. turning into a river. The weather folks completely missed this in their predictions.

I'm in Parkside, so higher ground.  But it was a challenge to get home.

I know I'm complaining about clouds when some of you are floating, but:

The topline forecast for Saturday has gone from sunny on Monday to mostly sunny on Wednesday to partly sunny (mostly cloudy?) today for my area. It happens all the time. My view, albeit conspiratorial, on why this happens is well known.

Meanwhile, Smell's friends at the NWS are probably as he has described. You can see extensive and highly technical forecast discussions on their site, all of which have talked about uncertainty re: the weekend forecast. But someone distorts that topline forecast. All. The. Time. Until, late in the week, they have to tell the truth.

Why?

this has become a common occurrence -- pop-up precipitation events that weren't foreseen.

i infer that the models on which forecasters rely don't/can't account for how much more moisture is actually in the atmosphere.

it was several years ago, i was driving down a main artery in the greater buffalo and i was just struck by how different the rain seemed than the rain of my childhood, teenage years. so much heavier.

I don't ever remember is getting this much heavy rain over a summer as we did this one...it was either like no rain or 1+ inches of rain...

That 3+ inches a few days ago officially at the airport was insane and some places for even more than that.

Also, I know people farther north near Lake Ontario and that have absolutely got hammered with heavy rain numerous times when Buffalo hasn't got much if anything on those days.
