Remember when a battered team driving 90 yards late in the final quarter for the go-ahead TD, holding the opposition to a game-tying 51-yard field goal, then marching 48 yards downfield in less than 25 seconds to win the game was something to celebrate?

People’s choices are strange to me.

This is an odd take to me. You're making almost a personal attack on some fans (if I'm understanding which fans you are talking about) . It's not hard to understand what's going on here. Most fans think the dream of a lifetime is at hand, but they see signs it might not be the year after all. It's neuroticism mostly. It's not about enjoying a win anymore. That's Bills 2019ish. See also 2006-2007 Sabres.

Man I remember watching games in 06-07 and being like, “They only won by 2 and Briere only notched 1 point? Ok, I guess.”

You are correct that the mindset completely changes, for better or worse. A lot of it is intuitive, as a fan you can kind of just feel if things are moving along the right way: in 05-06 by the second half it felt like the wins, tantamount to being the best/one of best in league, were flowing naturally.

After the winning streak in 06-07, it just often felt like they had to grind out the wins more than you’d want to be seeing from a team with Cup expectations. And, interestingly in this case, imo it bore out: we weren’t as good that year I don’t think, record be damned. Playoff performance would seem to bear that out.

Even during the 1-7-1 streak they went on right after St. Patty's Day?

25-12-4 in second half before playoffs started, 108 point pace (actually, we ended up with 110 so our first half was almost the same as the second)

But, again - the entire point I was making is that perception, regardless of record, obviously changes re:expectation. 52 wins when, the last season played, we didn’t make the playoffs, was incredible.

The next year, coming off a playoffs where we all felt we were the best team in the league..50 wins was what we ASSUMED would happen - which can make it more straining, imo.

McDermott is one fine coach.

He's really tuned into his players. His talents go beyond strategy and game day decisions. He and Beane are in sync as to how to build a roster. It's not simply about talent. It is getting the right character people who are bought in to the team. When you have a collection of the right kind of people there is an internal dynamic where leadership comes from within.

Kevin Adams has noted on WGR that he has talked to Beane and McDermott on more than a few occasions about the conceptual aspect of building a team/roster. That is heartening to hear.

Apparently KA doesn’t absorb much from those conversations.  Beane never sits on his hands.  Need D line, sign Miller, Lawson and Phillips; need a RB, he goes and gets Hines; need a LB, claim Klein, need a safety bring back Marlowe.  KA, on the other hand, 3 D injured do nothing.

The Bills are in a Super Bowl window. It’s a lot different than the current Sabres.

The Sabres stars are in their prime, including Vo, Dahlin, Tnt, Tuch, and Skinner.  The window is now open, but our GM doesn’t see it.

You and I agree that this Sabres team needs to add to be a playoff team.  Your comments that I agree with include another D and a goaltending upgrade.

The Sabres aren’t on the cusp of a playoff run today. They just aren’t.

Also, as you know, team building is a lot different in hockey than in football.

I'm not sold on either.

I went full-on fire McDermott when he made the Peterman decision.  It’s been a long road, but he has earned his stripes. Game management is so much better than the early days.

It’s hard to rail on Beane.  With a game day roster of 53, you’re not going to get every decision correct (Star contract, Wyatt Teller, the Kelvin Benjamin trade, etc). The good far outweighs the bad.

Good question.

He is on the path of a great coach.  If he wins a SB he will be considered great by many.  Sometimes that is a long journey, even for the great ones.  Even without a SB his coaching (especially defensive), his team building, and his culture developing methods have results that are very significant.

No, Dahlin is NOT in his prime.  He is still improving as he gets stronger & wiser.  The rest of the league should be shaking at how much better this kid can be and how long he'll be good.

There are 4 Sabres past their prime:  Anderson, Okposo, Skinner, & Girgensons.  (Though would say that the way he plays, Skinner is still in his prime.)

There are 8  10 Sabres in their prime:  Tuch, Lyubushkin, Thompson, Hinostroza, Olofsson, Bryson, Fitzgerald, Pilut, Jost, & Comrie.

There are 5 Sabres on the verge of their prime: Mittelstadt, Asplund, Dahlin, Jokiharju, & UPL.

The rest aren't even close to their primes: Power, Samuelsson, Cozens, Quinn, Peterka, & Krebs.

Yes, they may be wasting a quality year of Skinner, Thompson, Tuch, Olofsson, & Lyubushkin.  But only 2 of those are expected to be true parts of the core of this team.  The entirely of this team's core, except for those 2 are not in their prime.  And some of what likely will be parts (such as Savoie & Levi) aren't even playing pro hockey yet.

Dahlin will have a long prime but it does look like he’s now entered it. Probably just depends on how dialled in one wants that period to be: It will be a period with plenty of years, him being in his prime right now doesn’t mean we are seeing his absolute best season, just one that could easily be in a block with his other best.

Makar was in his 3rd nhl season by experience and 5th post draft when he won the conn smythe, Dahlin is in his 5th for both. Considering statistical prime for offensive output is age 22-26, I think it’s possible he has arguably just entered it given his start. If he’s putting up ~ point a game this year after all is said and done, and we are seeing a Norris nom, id be comfortable saying we are dealing with prime Dahlin. He’d be good enough to be the 1D if not best player on a cup team if he’s putting up Makar like results - since we saw Makar do it

Just my definition

The Miller news so far is a mixed bag of encouraging and confusing.

Apparently they know he’ll need surgery after the season? What’s the recovery horizon there?

The Bills need Rousseau (sp) back - and also need him to step up.

I feel as though the Bills haven’t had a ton of injuries - but, those they’ve had, have been to really important players. Not important on the levels of 17 or 14 … but 40 going down approaches that level for sure. The Bills are not a SB contender without him, imo. (That is, unless Rousseau were to suddenly take a quantum leap.)
