Lance Lysowski : cheaper route for goaltending might be their best option again this summer.

Lance Lysowski recently reported the Sabres don’t expect some of the higher-tiered UFA goalies will be available to them. Going the cheaper route might be their best option again this summer.

Lysowski also speculated that Victor Olofsson could be a trade candidate. He had 20 goals and 49 points this season but is a restricted free agent with arbitration rights who needs to produce more. He completed a two-year deal worth an annual average value of $3.050 million.

Translation:  Anderson plus a scrub 2.0.  I can’t begin to say how angry this makes me.  It’s time for KA to step and get some real friggin goaltending to support this rebuild.

After watching Darcy Kuemper last night, I'd pass on him. Let in a couple iffy ones especially the fifth goal. He was finally pulled after that blunder.

Vasilevskiy was brutal in game 2, wouldn’t touch him with a 10 foot pole and MacKinnon hasn’t scored in the Finals, wouldn’t even pick him up on waivers.😜

One or two bad games does not make a career.

It does not mean they won't try nor that they might not make a trade.

Having said that, GMKA must do better than Anderson and UPL this off-season.  This team must ascend the standings.  Having solid goaltending behind an almost absurdly young top 4 D is a necessity.

Kuempur has a save percentage below .900 for these playoffs. On a great team

I wonder if KA or a member of his team leaked the story to LL so that the fanbase gets used to the idea that KA is going to fail the team again with bad goaltending

Wasn't that article just Lance's opinion?

I don't think it was an opinion piece as to the goaltending, not if I'm reading the quote below accurately.

Found the original piece. It’s from Lance answering reader questions.

Jay Irving asks: Do you expect the Sabres to add an established goalie in free agency that is still in their prime? Are there legitimate trade options?

There aren’t established goalies in their prime in free agency. There rarely are. Teams sign those guys because there aren’t many in the NHL. Ville Husso, Darcy Kuemper, Marc-Andre Fleury and Jack Campbell are among the top options available next month. The Sabres are going to pursue Husso and Campbell – they went after top goalies last summer – but both have their blemishes and it’s unlikely either will pick Buffalo.

Campbell, according to Evolving-Hockey.com, is projected to receive a six-year contract with a $5.7 million annual cap hit. Husso isn’t much less at $4.96 million over four years. They'll have other suitors, including playoff contenders. And is Adams willing to give a long-term contract to a backup such as Husso after he wouldn’t give a similar deal to Linus Ullmark a year ago? Also, signing a starting goalie to a long-term contract could be enough to discourage Devon Levi and/or Erik Portillo from signing.

In free agency, the Sabres are more likely to target bargain options such as Casey DeSmith, Mikko Koskinen, Eric Comrie and Kevin Lankinen. There are ample trade options. Will the Bruins make Ullmark available if they’re rebuilding? Jonathan Quick, John Gibson, Semyon Varlamov, James Reimer and Adin Hill are a few names to watch.

So basically nothing like "Spector" quoted him as saying!  These are reasonable comments and truthfully makes sense.  In the goaltending thread we have discussed acquiring Ullmark, giving Comrie and or DeSmith a chance and going after Husso or Campbell.  All would be upgrades over Anderson and a scrub 2.0.

Nothing here limits what KA might do as Spector implied.

I know I will elicit a blistering reflexive comment from @LGR4GM but not signing Ullmark last year at the contract that he was willing to sign for was a mistake. It put this franchise in a bad situation not only last year but also this year. A little more foresight and flexibility would have better served this franchise. This is a case where the GM outsmarted himself. This was a glaringly bad decision.

You keep saying that Ulmark would sign if Adams matched Boston, yet nothing I have read said this is true.

Get over it already; you’re turning the Ullmark non-signing into a bigger deal than when we traded ROR for garbage and Thompson.

You deserve to get blasted at this point. Let It Go. What was the deal he was willing to sign? He walked away for a better situation, disappointed them when it counted to the point they turned to their other goalie and are looking to move Ullmark after a single season. The guy is injury probes on top of it.

Don't worry, KA is going to trade for him this off-season.

What makes this situation Kafkaesque is the hope that the GM can come up with an Ullmark caliber of goalie. The GM ended up hurting the team with a self-inflicted wound. Stupid is stupid!

The Ullmark non-signing is a big deal that has reverberated into this season. The GM miscalculated. And it hurt the team.

I didn't say that Ullmark would sign if Adams matched Boston. He wanted a richer contract from Buffalo. The GM should have paid it.
