Would it be fair to say that he COULD be a Tanner Jeannot (or similar) for us in a few years?

I think that’s the profile.  Hopefully he can get to that level.

Is that right? 1 in 5 fourth rd picks play at least 100 NHL games? I would of guessed it was like 1 in 20.

Almost all guys who end up playing 100-200 NHL games are guys that you don’t even know of.  They are guys who are AAAA players who get parts of 3-4 seasons in the NHL, or guys who play a couple seasons as a 4th liner on some crappy bottom 5 NHL team.

His game is not like Jeannot’s.

He gets to gritty areas and doesn’t back down but hes not fast enough to wreak havoc on the forecheck and he’s not a player who punishes anyone.

Actually, if he's playing in junior all he gets paid by the Sabres organization is any signing bonus he might have negotiated.

Junior players get paid a small stipend by their teams, but you'd have to ask someone who follows junior hockey far more closely to know how much they get there.

That's to bad.

16 days away from making a decent buck playing a game you are now for nothing.

You go CHL!

This is a decade old, but I imagine this is still relatively valid still … if it’s not someone post more updated info..

”There is an agreement in place between the NHL and the CHL (Canadian Hockey League, the overarching organization beneath which stand the OHL, the WHL, and the QMJHL) which exists primarily to protect the CHL. The rule is as follows:

Players drafted and playing for CHL teams are ineligible to play in the professional minor leagues (AHL, ECHL) until they are 20 years old (by December 31st of that year) or have completed four years in major juniors.”

Should fix the title. His name is “Olivier” and not “Oliver.”

Pretty sure one wants his hair messed up and the other wants his picture taken. At least from what I have read. I'm no expert. Your going to have to ask Inky.

Interesting. Makes sense.

What is the reason behind signing a guy a year before he can actually turn pro(unless a miracle occurs and he makes the big team)?

Because NHL teams only hold CHL players' rights for 2 years.  If they don't sign after their 1st post draft year, there is a real possibility they'll lose their rights to sign that player if he's any good.

Thanks. I can never remember the details in terms of how long a team retains the rights of their draft picks.

Once they sign, their professional rights belong to the team that holds their ELC.  It works well enough for players in juniors.

The problem on the college side is they can't sign if they intend on playing more in college because as soon as they sign a professional contract (even if it doesn't kick in right away) they lose their college eligibility so they have to turn pro immediately if they want to play.  That's how you end up with players like Cal Peterson and potentially Johnson, Portillo and Levi walking.  You can't lock them up.

Which is why teams hold the rights to NCAA players for 4 years rather than just 2.

CHL players that were drafted at 18 & don't sign w/in 2 years go back into the draft & if somebody selects them, their rights are held for 2 more years by the team that selects them as a 20 yo.  The team that held a player's rights at 18 can redraft him if they want & he's still available at their selection.

Nobody can be "locked up" for more than 4 years,

Nadeau' team is playing the Oil King in the Memorial Cup on NHL-N currently.  1-1 after 1.

I am liking this kid.  We are starting to get a pretty nice pipeline in place and hopefully KA can get a few more in the upcoming draft.

I agree. The later rounds in particular would be great to hit on a few more.

When they hit, it's like a bonus.
