Just saw this on FB.

Sabres mourn the loss of alumnus Fred Stanfield.  Forward spent four seasons in Buffalo, remained in WNY after retirement

Buffalo Sabres alumnus Fred Stanfield, a member of the 1974-75 team that reached the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in franchise history, passed away Monday at the age of 77.

Stanfield played 14 NHL seasons with Chicago, Boston, Minnesota, and Buffalo and was a key producer on Boston Bruins teams that won the Stanley Cup in 1970 and 1972.

I believe he was on the great Bruins teams of the late 1960's to the early 1970's.

Bought a few things from him over the years.  Nice guy.

He was also part of an awesome power play for the Sabres in the mid-70s.  It was the French Connection, Jerry Korab and Stanfield IIRC.  They were often like bing-bang-boom-goal.

Just read (h/t to Hoppe) that Stanfield was a point a game player after @Pimlach acquired him in late Jan. '75. Had the Sabres won it all, maybe the trade would have been remembered in the same vein as the Isles' deal for Butch Goring in '80.

RIP Fred Stanfield.  Another fine player that made Buffalo his home.

Fred was a very good and versatile player. One more  example of Punch squeezing more good hockey out of a veteran, giving up little while making his team better.  In the past 6-7 years, if Buffalo had a real NHL GM that could make hockey trades and bring in solid guys like Stanfield, Lorentz, Robert, and Korab, like Punch did, then maybe Eichel and Reinhart would have had a better chance to succeed.  Just maybe they would like being Sabres?

Goring had a bit more longevity and more gas in his tank when the Isles got him.  Goring was a guy that would drive you crazy.  Very clutch in the playoffs.  He is actually is credited with the playoff beard habit.  He was said to have questionable hygiene habits during the playoffs to keep people away from him.    😂
