Now, Carrier was lost in the expansion draft, so I'm not so sure what the Sabres could have done there. Byron was part of a fair trade for Regehr and Kotalik, and now he wears an A for the most storied team in hockey. (Notably, that trade was part of the reason the Sabres were so thin at C in the early 10s--he was a center prospect when traded.) The Sabres got a solid defenseman (Regehr), a shootout specialist (return of Kotalik), and a second-round pick (McCabe) for an undersized C prospect (Byron) and a third-pair defenseman (Butler). Tough to find fault with that. But Byron is in the third round, and the Sabres haven't made the playoffs. He was a first time, and only one-time, GM and he was a complete failure. He gave away his own assets like candy and left the farm team bare. Who cares if the league likes you?
